The tiny Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class roadster gets a new entry-level engine for 2016, and a new model designation to go with it. The SLK250 is now SLK300 and uses a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine (241 hp/273 lb-ft of torque) and nine-speed automatic transmission in place of last year's 1.8L turbo four and standard six-speed manual/optional seven-speed automatic.
SLK300 models join the SLK350 and SLK55 AMG that are carried over from last year, with a few running changes: passive blind spot assist is standard across the line; SLK350 and SLK55 get a Final Edition Package; and SLK300 models with the premium package will now come with a media interface and bi-xenon headlights.
The SLK350 and SLK 55's powertrains are identical to those in last year's versions: the 350 gets a 3.5L V6 (302 hp/273 lb-ft), while the SLK55's motivation comes from a 5.5L V8 making 415 hp and 398 lb-ft. These two models stick with the seven-speed automatic. All SLK models are rear-wheel drive.
Natural Resources Canada fuel consumption figures are 9.6/7.3 L/100 km (city/highway) for the SLK300, 11.1/8.1 in the SLK 350, and 12.4/8.5 for the SLK 55.
Standard kit in the SLK300 includes sport suspension, eco start/stop, passive blind spot assist, attention assist, automatic climate control, heated front seats, power seat and steering column adjustments with memory, 17-inch wheels, Nappa leather steering wheel, "artico" upholstery, auto-dimming side mirrors, ambient lighting, fabric windscreen, and a garage door opener.
The SLK350 gains AMG styling cues, cross-drilled brake rotors, bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and taillights, adaptive high beam assist, dynamic handling package, power-folding side mirrors, media interface, dual-zone climate control, upgraded stereo, leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels, and passive blind spot assist.
Finally, the SLK55 gets an AMG-tuned sport suspension, analog clock, Nappa leather upholstery, controlled efficiency start/stop mode and a trunk lip spoiler.
Prices range from $58,100 for the SLK300 to $82,200 for the SLK55.
