For 2007, the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class roadster comes with a few upgrades. All models receive updated dashboard and interior surfaces, with a smoother grained finish for easier care, and S-Class-style chrome SmartKey.
The SLK280 receives rain-sensing wipers and sport suspension as standard equipment, and has a new $1,500 Premium Package of Airscarf (neck-level heating), fabric wind deflector, heated seats and heated steering wheel. The AMG Sport Package is no longer available on the SLK280.
The SLK350 receives bi-Xenon headlamps with washers and cornering lights, rain-sensing wipers, heated front seats and sport suspension; there’s also a new $2,100 Premium Package of Airscarf, fabric wind deflector, power-adjustable front seats, memory package with power steering column and heated wheel, and the available AMG Sport Package now includes the Sport automatic transmission with wheel-mounted paddles.
The SLK55 AMG now receives Airscarf, fabric wind deflector, bi-Xenon headlamps with washers and cornering lights, rain-sensing wipers and wheel-mounted paddles. There are two new option packages available: the $3,800 Technology Package adds navigation system and six-CD Harman/Kardon Logic7 surround sound system, while the $8,500 AMG Performance Package adds Alcantara-trimmed AMG sport steering wheel, carbon-fibre interior trim, AMG sport suspension with “Nürburgring” calibration, AMG compound braking system with two-piece ventilated discs, and 18-inch two-piece AMG alloy wheels with performance tires.
The SLK line-up comes with three engines: a 3.0-litre V6 with six-speed manual in the SLK280, a 3.5-litre V6 with six-speed manual in the SLK350, and a 5.5-litre V8 with seven-speed automatic in the SLK55 AMG. The 3.0-litre and 3.5-litre can be optioned to the seven-speed automatic.
Features on the SLK280 include 16-inch alloy wheels, CD stereo, sport seats, garage door opener, interior light package, side-impact head/thorax airbags, knee airbags, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers with heated washers, and rearview and driver’s side auto-dimming mirrors. The SLK350 includes 17-inch alloy wheels and bi-Xenon headlamps.
The SLK55 AMG includes ten-way power memory seats, power tilt and telescopic steering column, wheel-mounted shift paddles, speed-sensitive steering, AMG-tuned suspension, and 18-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels.
There are some welcome extras in the 2007 additions, including sport suspension to the entry-level 280, and the availability of Airscarf, which makes it much more pleasant to take this McLaren-styled roadster out on chilly mornings with the retractable roof where it belongs – safely stowed under the tonneau. The SLK is an eye-catching vehicle, but one complaint is with the seating position, which isn’t necessarily the best for shorter drivers; it’s hard to understand why, at this price range, you must pay extra to get a power seat that companies like Hyundai can throw in as standard equipment.
