History/Overview
The Mercedes SL Roadster started out as a racing car back in the 1950s, but has since become the company's grand tourer. Not as large or expensive as the S-Class convertible, with no rear seats, this one is for two people to conquer continents with style, grace, and pace.
What's New in 2020?
A new SL is on the way soon, with the current car on sale since 2016. That means that for this year there aren't any changes of note, since they'll be saved for the replacement. The ultrafast AMG SL 63 has been dropped for this year.
Available Trims
Just two trim levels of SL Roadster are available, the V6-powered SL 450 and the V8 SL 550. Both have the same folding hardtop, so the difference is how quickly you want to go.
Standard Features
SL models start with a sun-reflecting leather, ideal for cars that will sit with the top open. The seats are heated and there's a power wind blocker to help keep the breezes out of the cabin. A 7.0-inch center display is standard, controlled by the Mercedes Comand interface with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto and a Harman/Kardon audio ssytem.
Active brake assist, attention assist, active LED lights, parking assist, and pop-up roll bars are all standard.
Key Options
A Premium Package adds ventilated massaging seats, adjustable tint panoramic roof, Airscarf neck heating, and a foot-activated trunk opener. The Intelligent Drive package includes adaptive cruise, blind spot assist, lane keep assist, active steering assist, and active braking assist. A Bang & Olufsen audio system is on the options list, as is an upgrade to Nappa leather.
Fuel Economy
The SL 450 is estimated to get 11.8/8.5 L/100 km city/highway. The SL 550 has an official estimate of 13.5/9.3.
Competitors
The SL offers a more luxurious competitor to cars like the Porsche 911 and Jaguar F-Type as well as the Aston Martin Vantage.
