The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class roadster undergoes a transformation for 2007, with new engines, new model designations and new styling. Model choices are now the SL550, SL55 AMG, SL600 and SL65 AMG.
The four new engines are the 5.5-litre V8 in the SL550; supercharged 5.5-litre V8 in the SL55 AMG; bi-turbo 5.5-litre V12 in the SL600; and bi-turbo 6.0-litre V12 in the SL65 AMG.
Up front, the SL-Class receives a new grille with three slats instead of four, and a new bumper with two additional air openings and chrome trim rings around the fog lamps. At the rear, there are new clear-lens taillights, a V-shaped taper to the trunk lid, trunk lid spoiler lip with integrated third brake light and adaptive brake light, two large chrome-plated tailpipes, and tapered rear bumper. There are also new wheel designs.
Inside, there are wider sill mouldings, new leather-look instrument cluster shroud, new dashboard ventilation and new roof control switch. An electronic trunk closure is available as an option, and on models equipped with the AMG sport transmission, wheel-mounted shift paddles replace the shift buttons.
The SL550 includes a seven-speed automatic transmission, 18-inch alloy wheels, six-CD Bose surround sound stereo, navigation system, five airbags, heated leather seats, garage door opener, memory for seats and mirrors, multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control, tire pressure loss warning system, Active Body Control, auto-dimming mirrors, bi-Xenon headlamps with active light system, washers and cornering lights, Parktronic parking assist, rain-sensing wipers, and speed-sensitive steering with Steering Assist.
The SL55 AMG includes the SL550 features, along with 19-inch alloy wheels, AMG-enhanced five-speed automatic transmission, Alcantara roof liner, rear luggage belts and Keyless Go.
The SL600 includes 18-inch wheels, five-speed automatic transmission, heated and ventilated perforated leather seats, and electric trunk closer.
The SL65 AMG adds 19-inch wheels and AMG-enhanced five-speed automatic transmission.
All SL-Class models come with a metal top that folds automatically, and stores itself under a hard tonneau cover at the touch of a button. An extremely rigid chassis gives this roadster superb handling characteristics and body integrity that’s evident even when the top is down. Body roll, dive and squat are virtually eliminated by Active Body Control, a system of high-pressure hydraulics controlled by microcomputers. There are also numerous options available, including a glass sunroof, for considerable high-end personalization.
