History/Overview
The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class has underpinned the brand’s SUV lineup since its introduction in 2015, when it was one of the first of a fast-growing class of subcompact luxury SUVs. A second-generation GLA arrived last year.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2022, the GLA is carried forward with no notable changes.
Available Trims
Mercedes offers its smallest crossover in GLA 250, AMG GLA 35, and AMG GLA 45 models. All use a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine, with each model getting a specific tune with increasing performance. Common to all GLA models are AWD and an eight-speed transmission.
Standard Features
The GLA 250 comes with 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers with heated washers, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a panoramic roof, automatic A/C, 7.0-inch driver info and central touchscreen displays, and the MBUX infotainment system.
AMG GLA 35 trim adds 19-inch wheels, sport seats, dual 10.25-inch displays, power-folding side mirrors with auto dimming, three-stage suspension adjustments, and a Nappa-trimmed steering wheel. AMG GLA 45’s sole addition is satellite radio.
Key Options
A premium package adds dual 10.25-inch driver info and central touchscreen displays, a power passenger seat, auto-dimming mirrors, power-folding side mirrors, blind spot monitoring, passive keyless entry, and smartphone integration. A navigation package needs no explanation.
An advanced driver assistance package brings active/evasive steering assist, cross-traffic braking, active blind spot/lane change/lane keeping assist, and cruise control with stop-and-go.
Stand-alone options include an upgraded stereo, head-up display, garage door remote, active park assist, and 360-degree camera views.
Fuel Economy
As of this writing, Mercedes had only published fuel consumption estimates for the GLA 250, which is rated at 10.3/7.3 L/100 km (city/highway). The AMG GLA 35 and 45’s figures should be similar to those for last year’s model, at 10.4/8.1 L/100 km and 11.6/8.8 L/100 km, respectively.
Competition
The GLA may have helped create the subcompact luxury SUV class, but many other brands have glommed onto it since then. The GLA competes for buyers with the BMW X1 and X2, Audi Q3, Lexus UX, Volvo XC40, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, and Cadillac XT4.
