Built on the same platform as the CLA-Class compact sedan and GLA-Class compact crossover, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, with its tall hatchback shape offers buyers a lot of interior flexibility and cargo space.
For 2017, the B-Class gains a few upgrades including Android Auto capability, plus a new colour - Cavansite Blue Metallic.
The B-Class is exclusively available in B250 form with a 2.0-litre turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine. It produces 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and drives through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which is controlled via a column-mounted gearstick lever. Front-wheel drive is standard on the B-Class, with 4Matic all-wheel drive as an option. The 4Matic system defaults to front-wheel drive, but can send up to 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels when needed.
Though the B-Class is a compact car, it feels like a much larger vehicle thanks to its higher seating position and well-damped ride. It's a hefty vehicle at well over 1,400 kg, so it's not as thrifty on fuel as some of its rivals. Even though an idle-stop system is standard, city consumption is 9.2 L/100 km, while highway consumption is rated at 6.6 L/100 km. The 4Matic version consumes 10 and 7.5 litres, respectively. Premium fuel is required.
While the B-Class is sold exclusively as an electric vehicle south of the border, Canadians must opt for the Smart ForTwo electric drive should they desire genuine zero tailpipe emissions motoring.
The cabin has functionality as its top priority and prominently features the car's iPad-like infotainment screen high up on the dashboard. The standard setup uses a 7.0-inch screen, which can be upgraded to a larger 8.0-inch screen when equipped with the Premium package. The bigger screen also includes a reverse camera, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, and is bundled in with other options including a dual-zone climate control with activated charcoal air filter and blind-spot monitoring. Benz's Artico leatherette upholstery is standard, though the optional Sport class jazzes things up with Dinamica faux suede trim and red contrast stitching. For a more traditional luxury feel, the Exclusive Package adds wood trim, and leatherette-upholstered dash and door trims. Features like automatic parking assist, and radar cruise control are available as options.
The B-Class can carry a total of 488 litres with the rear seats up, and 1,547 litres with the standard 33/66 split folding seats flat. That's nearly as much as the bigger, pricier BMW X1, and much more than the comparably expensive Audi Q3. Those requiring added versatility can opt for the aptly named Versatility Package which adds a sliding rear bench seat and a flat-folding front passenger seat.
With a starting price of $31,700, the B250 remains the most affordable way of putting a three-pointed start on your driveway. Opting for the 4Matic variant raises the price to $34,000 which is still less expensive than the B-Class's platform-mates, the CLA-Class and GLA-Class.
