History/Overview
It’s been a few good years for fans of small European cars, thanks to Mercedes-Benz’s decision to bring its subcompact A-Class to Canada in 2019 in sedan and hatchback form.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
But if you like the A-Class, buy one this year, as Benz has said it will drop the car from its lineup after 2022. Understandably, there are no changes to the A-Class for its final year on the Canadian market.
Available Trims
Mercedes offers the A-Class in A 220 sedan and A 250 hatchback trims, and as the speedier AMG A 35 sedan and hatch. All are powered by a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine tuned for different levels of performance.
Standard Features
The A 220’s cabin comes with heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, panoramic sunroof, heated side mirrors, automatic A/C, passive keyless entry, and 7.0-inch driver and infotainment displays. Outside, there are LED headlights, 17-inch wheels, and rain-sensing wipers with heated washers.
AMG A 35 models get 18-inch wheels, 10.25-inch display screens, power-folding side mirrors, ambient lighting, and sport seats.
Key Options
A sport package for A 220 and A 250 adds AMG body styling, 18-inch wheels, sport seats, and a leather steering wheel. A night package copies that but adds black exterior trim. A tech package brings multibeam LED headlights, automatic high beams, and radar cruise control. You can also add a heated steering wheel as a stand-alone extra.
In A 220 and A 250, a premium package adds the larger display screens, passive keyless entry, hands-free trunk, auto-dimming/power-folding mirrors, and ambient lighting. Navigation, ventilated front seats, and a head-up display are stand-alone extras.
A driver assistance pack bundles active/evasive steering assist, blind spot/lane keeping assist, forward collision mitigation, cross-traffic alert, and cruise control with stop-and-go.
AMG models can add a driver’s package with adaptive suspension and performance-oriented driveline ugprades.
Fuel Economy
Mercedes-Benz’s fuel consumption estimates are 9.5/6.8 L/100 km (city/highway) for the A 220; 10.0/7.0 L/100 km in the A 250; and 10.8/7.9 for the AMG A 35.
Competition
The A-Class competes with the Audi A3, Acura ILX and Integra, Mini Cooper S, and BMW 2 Series. You can also cross-shop the A-Class with the Mazda3 GT, with or without its available turbocharged engine.
