History/Overview
While many automakers have begun moving away from subcompact cars in recent years, Mercedes-Benz actually added one in 2019 in the form of the A-Class sedan and wagon. Though the A-Class was a new model at the time, it effectively replaced the CLA-Class sedan and B-Class wagon to become the brand’s entry-level offering.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
There are no notable changes to the A-Class for 2021.
Available Trims
Mercedes offers the A-Class as the A 250 and AMG A 35 hatch, and the A 220 and AMG A 35 sedan. All use a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with differing power levels. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and AWD are standard across the line.
Standard Features
A 220 sedan and A 250 hatchback models come with 17-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, LED taillights and daytime running lights, and rain-sensing wipers with heated washers. Inside, there’s a power driver’s seat, automatic A/C, heated front seats, artico upholstery, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, 7.0-inch infotainment and driver info displays, MBUX infotainment system, and Bluetooth with audio streaming.
AMG A 35 models gain sport suspension, exhaust, and brake systems, plus a performance-oriented transmission setup. There are also 18-inch wheels, a Nappa leather steering wheel, ambient cabin lighting, sport seats, artico/dinamica upholstery, auto-dimming mirrors, power-folding side mirrors, dual 10.25-inch displays, voice control, and lighted door sills.
Key Options
A tech package adds LED headlights with adaptive high beams, and radar cruise control. To the A 220 and A 250, the premium package brings the larger digital displays, voice controls, blind spot assist, passive keyless entry, auto-dimming mirrors, power-folding side mirrors, ambient lighting, and smartphone integration with wireless charging.
A navigation package is available, and an advanced driver assist pack adds collision avoidance and semi-autonomous driving features.
Fuel Economy
Mercedes-Benz’s fuel consumption estimates for the A-Class are 9.4/6.8 L/100 km (city/highway) for the A 250 hatch, and 9.6/6.9 L/100 km for the A 220 sedan. AMG A 35 models are rated 10.6/8.2 L/100 km (city/highway) for the hatch, and 10.7/8.2 in the sedan.
Competition
Primary competitors for the A-Class include the Audi A3, BMW 2 Series, Honda Civic Type R, Acura ILX, and the Mini Cooper S five-door. You can get similar performance at lower prices in the VW GTI, GLI, and Golf R; the Mazda3 Turbo; and the Subaru WRX.
