For 2007, the Mazda B-Series of pickup trucks undergoes some trim changes. A tire pressure monitoring system is standard on all models, and all stereos are now CD/MP3 compatible, with an auxiliary audio input jack. A tilt column and cruise control with wheel-mounted controls now becomes standard on the B4000 4x2, and is now part of the Power Package on the B3000, and the SE Plus Package on the B4000 4x4. New exterior colours Vista Blue Metallic and Pueblo Gold Metallic replace Sandstorm Metallic and Sonic Blue Metallic.
Option packages are the Power Package, which includes power mirrors, windows, locks with keyless entry, cruise control and tilt column; and the SE Plus Package, with power mirrors, windows, locks with keyless entry, cruise control, tilt column, sport bucket seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The B-Series, which is a Mazda-trimmed version of the Ford Ranger, is available in three engine sizes: the 2.3-litre four-cylinder B2300, the 3.0-litre V6 B3000, and the 4.0-litre V6 B4000. The base transmission is a five-speed manual that can be upgraded to a five-speed automatic. Configurations are Regular Cab and Cab Plus, with two small rear-hinged access doors and two rear jump seats.
The B2300 is available only in Regular Cab configuration, and in 2WD. Features on the B2300 include 15-inch steel wheels, anti-lock brakes, trailer tow harness, sliding rear window, privacy glass, 60/40 split-bench seat, cloth upholstery, and CD/MP3 with auxiliary input jack and four speakers. Air conditioning and automatic transmission can be added.
The B3000 comes in Cab Plus with 2WD, and adds 15-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, full-size spare time, limited-slip axle, engine immobilizer, and body-coloured wheel lip mouldings, door handles, bumpers and grille surround. Air conditioning, automatic transmission and the Power Package can be added.
The B4000 comes in Cab Plus with 2WD or 4WD. The 2WD model comes only with an automatic transmission, and adds air conditioning, power mirrors, power locks with keyless entry, power windows, cruise control, tilt column, black door handles, and chrome grille and bumpers; the 4WD version comes with a standard transmission or optional automatic, and also adds 16-inch alloy wheels, skid plates, front tow hooks and premium cloth upholstery, but does not come with cruise control or tilt column. Those can be added as part of the optional SE Plus Package, available only on the B4000 4x4 model.
The Mazda B-Series is a small truck compared to much of its competition, which has bulked up to midsize; still, shorter drivers may find that the Mazda’s seating position still favours larger owners, with a long reach to the clutch. The tilt wheel previously only available on the B4000 can be added as part of a package to the B3000, which may make it a little easier to find the right position.
The Mazda is an older design and lacks much of the refinement available in other pickups, but its low price is very appealing to those who want a basic truck, not a luxury car. The rear jump seats in the Cab Plus are uncomfortable for adults, but they fold out of the way to make space for cargo; they’re suitable for older children, but must not be used with supplementary infant or child seats.
