When it comes to large luxury SUVs, there’s nothing quite like America’s premiere offerings, the Cadillac Escalade and the Lincoln Navigator. While Lincoln hasn’t exactly put up the strongest of fights against its cross-town rival, the Navigator and its lengthened variation, the Navigator L, are back in the game thanks to a substantial update for 2015.
New styling – arguably much classier than the blinged-out chrome grille of last year’s model – is just the beginning. From a mechanical standpoint, the biggest change is a new engine. Out went the anemic 5.4-litre V8 in favour of the small but potent twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine. Mated to a six-speed automatic, it’s capable of towing the better part of 9,000 lbs (8,600 to be exact), which is more than most luxury SUVs can muster. The Navigator also receives new electronically adjustable dampers which provide a smooth ride and surprisingly adept road manners.
Lincoln also revised the interior with improved materials and a new reconfigurable instrument cluster. It’s decidedly less truck-like on the inside, though it still retains the past model’s upright design. All Navigators come standard with the latest version of Sync and MyLincoln Touch, which features traditional buttons instead of capacitive controls for the centre stack. A power tilting and telescoping steering column, plus power-adjustable pedals and a power driver’s seat should ensure drivers of all shapes and sizes are comfortable.
Sitting at the top of the Lincoln lineup, the Navigator comes lavishly equipped. Navigation, moonroof, 10-way heated and cooled premium leather seats, second-row heated seats, remote starter, THX Surround Sound audio system, Bluetooth, USB audio ports, blind-spot monitor with cross-traffic assist, reverse camera and parking sensors, overhead console, reverse camera, power-operated running boards, power pedals, power tailgate, power folding third row, capless fuel filler, 20-inch wheels, and smart key with push-button start are all standard.
The Reserve Package adds premium leather upholstery, leather-wrapped door panels and dashboard, Tuxedo Black power running boards, 22-inch wheels, Zircote wood trim, and nicer floor mats.
The extended L version is available in both trim levels, and adds additional cargo space plus a standard cargo organizer.
