NEW FOR 2014:
- New colours
- Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package now standard
Lincoln’s full-size sport utility vehicle has been on the market in its present form for seven years, and in those seven years, not much has changed. In fact, pretty much nothing has changed. The ‘ute, offered in regular and long-wheelbase L forms, offers a time-proven powertrain and a comfortable ride thanks to fully independent suspension front and rear.
The engine is still the same as when was first launched – a 5.4-litre V8 engine that was once the staple of the Ford F-150 lineup. One of the few remaining three valve-per-cylinder designs on sale, it makes just 310 hp; torque is healthier at 365 lb-ft, which in conjunction with a standard heavy-duty towing package is enough to tow nearly 9,000 lb (slightly less for the L). Opt for the L version and you’ll also be able to haul a lot of cargo – up to 3,630 L with all seats folded. Fuel economy is par for the course for a larger SUV – 16.4 L/100 km city, and 11.3 on the highway.
While there’s plenty of wood and leather to be found inside the Navigator, the design is like stepping back through time. The bluff dual-cowl dashboard design and segmented, thin-needle instruments are straight from the 1960s. It’s a bit at odds with the navigation system and climate controls, which were plucked straight from the modern-era Ford trucks parts bin, although you will find some unexpected niceties such as power-operated running boards and power-operated pedals. Drivers will enjoy the Navigator’s quiet ride and handling; it is quite adroit for something that tips the scales at a pavement-crushing 6,000 lbs.
All Navigators come well-equipped with power liftgate, power heated and cooled front seats, rain-sensing wipers, power-operated running boards, power-folding third-row seats, power tilt steering column, navigation system with THX II surround sound system, 110-volt power outlet, capless fuel filler, 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, front and rear parking sensors, reverse camera, power moonroof, and more.
The Monochrome Limited Edition Package reduces some of the Navigator’s high-reflective facade with body-colour upper grille trim, lower body cladding, plus two-tone leather upholstery and olive ash wood trim.
The long-wheelbase L is available in both standard and Monochrome Limited Edition variants.
