NEW FOR 2009:
- New all-wheel drive models
For 2009, the Lexus LS line-up adds an all-wheel drive configuration to the previous rear-wheel-only models. There are also slight changes to the list of trim options.
The LS 460 uses a 4.6-litre V8 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission; a hybrid version, the LS 600h, is covered separately. The LS 460 comes in a regular wheelbase or as the LS 460L with long wheelbase; both come in rear- or the new all-wheel drive variants. The all-wheel models add electric power steering with variable gear ratio, which can be added as an option to the long-wheelbase RWD model.
Features on the LS 460 models include 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, six-CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input and wheel-mounted controls, climate-control leather seats with 16-way driver and 12-way passenger power adjustment and memory, heated rear seats, electronic analog gauges, auto-dimming rearview mirror, auto up/down windows, cargo net, heated wood and leather-wrapped wheel with power tilt and telescopic, wallet-size Smart Card key, power-assisted trunk closer, pushbutton start, cruise control, power rear window sunshade, garage door opener, driver and passenger knee airbags, first-aid kit, reverse tilt auto-dimming mirrors with puddle lamps, power sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, adaptive auto-levelling high intensity discharge headlamps with washers, fog lamps, and LED taillamps.
The LS 460L models add Sound Library Music System, XM satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, heated and air conditioned power rear seats with memory, navigation system, power-assist doors, power trunk open and closure, and rear seat side airbags.
Available options include advance parking guidance system, pre-collision system with adaptive cruise control, and rear power reclining and slide-out seats. The advance parking is a self-guided system that will back in or parallel park the vehicle, but it requires the driver to go to through several steps using the backup camera's touch screen, and can take longer than parking the car yourself.
Seriously luxurious and very high quality, but with understated styling, the LS 460 is fast and handles very well. The long-wheelbase model doubles as a limousine, and can be ordered with a package that includes one rear ottoman seat – think La-Z-Boy on wheels – although taller people will find it necessary to sit sideways for their legs to fit. The rear-seat DVD-based entertainment system has a steep learning curve, but has enough to keep passengers occupied even on cross-country trips.
