The Range Rover Sport is Land Rover’s second-poshest model, a smaller, sportier version of the flagship Range Rover line.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
New for 2021 is a Silver Edition package available with the HSE trim level.
Available Trims
Land Rover offers the Range Rover Sport in SE, HSE Silver, HSE Dynamic, HST, Autobiography Dynamic, and SVR.
SE and HSE Silver start out with either a 3.0L turbodiesel V6 or a P360 3.0L mild hybrid in-line six-cylinder, while HST gets a more potent P400 mild hybrid setup.
HSE Silver and Autobiography Dynamic can be optioned with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain that uses a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder and an electric motor.
Finally, there are two versions of a supercharged 5.0L V8. HSE Dynamic and Autobiography Dynamic get the entry-grade V8, and the top-of-the-range SVR model uses a more powerful variant.
All Range Rover Sport models get an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
Standard Features
SE trim comes dressed with 19-inch wheels, air suspension, automatic LED headlights with signature lighting, auto-dimming/heated/power-folding side mirrors, headlight washers, and a power tailgate.
Inside, SE has a fixed panoramic sunroof, grained leather upholstery on 14-way power front seats, heated front and rear seats, ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, a 10.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an eight-speaker sound system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a heated and leather-trimmed steering wheel, and an integrated garage door remote.
Safety features include front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, tire pressure monitoring, collision detection with automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist.
HSE Silver trim adds a sliding panoramic sunroof, automatic high beams, 21-inch wheels, electric steering column adjustments, ventilated front seats, an upgraded stereo, a front console fridge, four-zone climate control, configurable ambient lighting, hands-free tailgate operation, a 360-degree parking aid, driver condition monitor, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and a clear exit monitor.
HST models bring Land Rover’s adaptive dynamics and configurable dynamics driver control systems, terrain response, a black contrast roof treatment, trim-specific 21-inch wheels, red brake calipers, a suede steering wheel, Windsor leather upholstery with extended leather interior, three-zone climate control, and drive and park packages.
HSE Dynamic models get terrain response 2, air suspension with dynamic response, trim-specific 21-inch wheels. This trim also reverts to two-zone climate control and does without automatic high beams.
Autobiography Dynamic trim comes with semi-aniline leather upholstery, 22-way front seat adjustments, power door closers, three-zone climate control, a 19-speaker stereo, low-range 4WD gearing, and an electronic active rear differential.
SVR trim gets yet another style of 21-inch wheels, trim-specific red brake calipers and air suspension, performance seats and steering wheel, and extended satin brushed aluminum trim. An SVR Carbon Edition package adds 22-inch wheels, carbon fibre interior and exterior trim, and a carbon fibre hood and engine cover.
Key Options
Land Rover’s options list is extensive, especially in lower-end versions of the Range Rover Sport. A Drive package adds blind spot monitoring, a driver condition monitor, and traffic sign recognition with speed limiter. A Drive Pro upgrade brings adaptive cruise control and high-speed emergency braking.
The Driver Assist pack builds on Drive Pro with a surround camera system, 360-degree parking aid, clear exit monitor, steering assist, and a rear traffic monitor.
You can also add towing and off-road packages, and a Vision Assist pack brings automatic high beams, a head-up display, and front fog lights.
Fuel Economy
As of this writing, Land Rover had not published fuel consumption ratings for the 2021 Range Rover Sport. However, given that the model’s powertrains are carried over from 2020, so should be their consumption estimates.
Diesel models are rated at 10.7/8.3 L/100 km (city/highway), and the mild hybrid gas six-cylinder’s estimates are 12.6/9.6 L/100 km.
The V8-powered models’ estimates are 14.1/10.7 L/100 km (city/highway) for the base model and 16.2/14.3 L/100 km in SVR guise.
Land Rover didn’t publish estimates for the PHEV Range Rover Sport in 2020.
Competition
With the Range Rover Sport, Land Rover hopes to attract buyers who might be considering one of Germany’s many luxury mid-size SUV models, like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz’s GLE, the Porsche Cayenne or the Audi Q8. You might also cross-shop the Sport with Italy’s Maserati Levante.
If the PHEV Range Rover Sport is what interests you, Volvo makes a compelling competitor in the XC90 T8. BMW has a plug-in X5, Porsche makes a PHEV Cayenne, and the Audi E-tron is a fully electric take on a mid-size luxury crossover.
