In many ways, the Soul was the perfect vehicle for Kia to kick off its foray into the electric vehicle market. Its quirky looks appealed to those EV buyers who appreciate styling that stands out from more conventional cars, while the Soul's spacious interior meant the bulky battery pack didn't intrude on passenger and cargo space.
The Soul EV carries over into 2019 with no changes.
That means buyers of this electric box once again get a rather limited driving range of 149 km, which leaves Kia near the back of the pack in that all-important regard. That's a surprising thing given parent company Hyundai gets 200 km out of its Ioniq EV and, as you read this, is getting set to launch an electric version of its Kona compact CUV that promises as much as 400 km of range. There's also the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf, both of which are more advanced tech-wise and can further on a charge.
However, like most electrics based on gas-powered cars, the Soul EV is the best version of this Kia wagon, its vibration-free powertrain lending a level of refinement uncommon for a compact.
With 109 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque, the Soul EV's specs are less-impressive than those of many competitors, but that's enough power to move the car with adequate alacrity.
For its base price (before any government incentives available where you are) Kia fits the Soul EV with 16-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, backup camera, air conditioning, heated steering wheel and navigation. A Luxury trim adds parking sensors, a more sophisticated climate control system that helps boost driving range, ventilated front seats and leather-like door trim.
A Luxury trim adds fog lights, power-folding side mirrors, aero wipers, range-enhancing climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, cargo cover, cargo net, 12-volt cargo area power outlet, leather seating, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and leatherette interior trim. The only option here is a sunroof.
Kia's energy consumption estimates are 1.9/2.5 Le/100 km (city/highway).
