History/Overview
Kia’s Sorento entered the mid-size SUV market in 2002 when it was introduced on a truck-based platform that lined up with the segment’s more rugged offerings. But since 2011, the Sorento name has been attached to a car-based crossover design that has helped it achieve mass appeal.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
Following last year’s introduction of an all-new fourth-generation model, the Sorento returns for 2022 with minor price adjustments.
Available Trims
Kia offers the Sorento in LX+, LX Premium, X-Line, EX, EX+, and SX trim levels. The first two trims use a 2.5L four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission; X-Line and up add turbocharging for a significant performance boost, and use an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. AWD is standard across the range.
Standard Features
Sorento LX+ comes fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with automatic high beams, seven-passenger capacity, heated front seats, manual A/C, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, and six-speaker audio. The Sorento’s standard safety features include lane keep/follow assist, and forward collision avoidance assist.
LX Premium gains 18-inch wheels, a power driver’s seat, heated steering wheel, dual-zone A/C, wireless phone charging, passive keyless entry, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors.
X-Line brings 20-inch wheels, six-passenger seating, and trim-specific styling elements.
EX gets black wheels, leatherette upholstery, a power front-passenger seat, wood-finish interior trim, satellite radio, hands-free power tailgate, and auto-dimming rearview mirror.
EX+ adds LED fog lights and taillights, a panoramic sunroof, power-folding side mirrors, heated rear seats, rear-door sun shades, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, a 110-volt power outlet, adaptive cruise control, highway drive assist, safe exit assist, rear occupant alert, front intersection assist, and front parking assist.
Finally, SX gains rain-sensing wipers, real leather seating, ventilated front seats, premium audio, digital gauges, a head-up display, a blind spot view monitor, and 360-degree camera views.
Fuel Economy
Kia estimates the Sorento’s fuel consumption at 10.1/9.2 L/100 km (city/highway) with the base 2.5L engine, and 11.1/8.4 L/100 km for turbocharged versions.
Competition
The Sorento is Kia’s entry in the popular mid-size crossover class, where it faces off against models like the Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda Passport, Chevrolet Blazer, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, and the Subaru Ascent.
