Kia's mid-size Sorento crossover gets a handful of new standard and available features as it moves into its second model year since a major redesign into its third generation.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone interface software are now standard in EX and SX models, and autonomous emergency braking is part of the SX+ package, where it joins the frontal collision warning and adaptive cruise control systems carried over from last year.
Despite Kia's ongoing position as a value leader, the Sorento shows how serious this South Korean company is about making an impression on drivers looking for an upscale experience. Which this mid-size crossover doesn't have the chassis chops to take on vehicles like Acura's MDX or the BMW X5 in terms of driver involvement, it does offer a quiet ride that feels like quality, and the V6 engine available in all trims (along with three-row seating) is smooth and strong.
Mechanically, the 2017 Sorento is the same as last year's model. Engine choices include a 2.4L four-cylinder (185 hp/178 lb-ft), a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder (240 hp/260 lb-ft) and a 3.3L V6 (290 hp/252 lb-ft), all of which come with a six-speed automatic transmission. All models but the LX 2.4 come with standard all-wheel drive; that entry-level trim gets it as an option.
Fuel consumption estimates, according to Natural Resources Canada's test method, are 11.5/9.3 L/100 km (city/highway) for a 2.4L AWD model and 12.3/9.4 with the 2.0L turbo and AWD. LX and EX V6 models are rated 13.2/9.3 L/100 km, while the SX's extra equipment (and weight) contribute to higher consumption, rated at 14.0/10.1 L/100 km.
LX trim includes air conditioning, second-row ventilation, six-speaker stereo with satellite radio, Bluetooth and USB inputs, cruise control, keyless entry, trip computer, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, 40/20/40 split-folding second-row seats, manual driver's seat adjustment with power lumbar and backup sensors.
EX models add 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, seven-inch display audio system, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay smartphone integration with Google Maps navigation, 110-volt power inverter, "supervision" LCD/TFT gauge cluster, intelligent keyless entry, express up/down power windows, rear door sunshades, heated steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, cargo cover, 14-way power driver's seat with four-way lumbar, leather upholstery, woodgrain accents, leather-trimmed steering wheel and shifter, backup camera, rear cross traffic alert and blind sport detection.
Finally, the SX trim brings 19-inch wheels, garage door opener, premium audio system, eight-inch multimedia interface with navigation, smart power liftgate, mood lighting, premium leather seats, heated second row seats, ventilated front seats, power front passenger seat adjustment and piano black interior accents.
V6-powered models add ventilation for third row seating, and LX Turbo models can add a package that includes dual-zone climate control, smartphone integration, 10-way power driver's seat, backup camera and other features otherwise reserved for the EX trim.
LX pricing starts at $27,695, the EX trim comes in at $35,995 and the SX's entry-level tag is $42,495.
