History/Overview
The Rio is Kia's entry-level model in Canada, a subcompact sold as the sedan you're reading about here, and a hatchback covered in a separate buyer's guide article. The current model is the car's fourth generation.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
For 2020, the Rio gets a new powertrain. There's a new version of the Gamma 1.6L engine and the Rio's first-ever continuously variable transmission (CVT), both of which are shared with the Hyundai Motor Group's other subcompact car, the Hyundai Accent. While the new engine is a bit less powerful than the one it replaces, Kia promises a serious improvement in fuel economy.
Available Trims
Kia offers the Rio in LX+ and EX trims. Transmission choices are a six-speed manual and the new CVT.
Standard Features
LX+ trim comes with 15-inch steel wheels with covers, automatic on/off headlights, heated side mirrors with power adjustments, heated front seats, a tilt/leather-trimmed steering wheel, power windows, air conditioning, a four-speaker stereo with 5.0-inch display, satellite radio, Bluetooth, cruise control, and keyless entry.
The EX package adds alloy wheels, LED positioning lights, fog lights, a sunroof, chrome exterior trim, tilt-and-telescopic steering, gloss black interior trim, automatic climate control, a six-speaker stereo with 7.0-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, passive keyless entry, connected car services, and an upgraded gauge cluster.
Fuel Economy
Kia's fuel consumption estimates for the 2020 Rio sedan are 7.2/5.9 L/100 km (city/highway) with the CVT, and 7.8/6.0 with the stickshift.
Competition
Among the Kia Rio's key competitors is the Hyundai Accent, which is essentially the same car with a different body and interior.
Other subcompacts are the Toyota Yaris, Honda's Fit, the Mitsubishi Mirage, and Chevrolet's Spark.
