History/Overview
The subcompact car segment remains the entry-level category in today’s new-car marketplace, but it might not be around for much longer. The Kia Rio is one of just a couple examples of this vehicle type left as subcompact crossovers take their place.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
The Kia Rio5 is unchanged for 2022; this handsome little car was last redesigned in 2018, and ahead of the sedan variant’s discontinuation in 2020.
Available Trims
Kia offers the Rio in LX+, LX Premium, and EX Premium trim levels. All use a 1.6L four-cylinder engine that starts with a six-speed manual gearbox in LX+ models; a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is optional in LX+ and standard in the two upper trims.
Standard Features
LX+ trim comes with 15-inch steel wheels with covers, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, air conditioning, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio, standard keyless entry, and cruise control.
LX Premium adds alloy wheels, a sunroof, heated steering wheel, and blind spot collision warning.
EX Premium gains automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, tilt-and-telescopic steering, automatic A/C, passive keyless entry, a 4.2-inch driver info display, forward collision mitigation, and lane keep/follow assist.
Fuel Economy
Kia fuel consumption estimates for the Rio are 7.7/6.1 L/100 km (city/highway) with the six-speed manual transmission, and 7.2/6.0 L/100 km with the automatic.
Competition
The Kia Rio’s competitors are the Mitsubishi Mirage, Chevrolet Spark, and Nissan Versa.
