Kia may be slowly, surely making a move upmarket, but that doesn't mean it's forgotten about its entry-level buyers. The Rio sedan and hatchback are stylish subcompacts that are more engaging and coddling than their accessible price point suggests. Kia's reaching for front-of-the-class fuel economy, too, with a new engine for 2020 that promises a major improvement in that regard.

Issue:
On certain vehicles, the brake hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU) could short circuit.
Safety Risk:
A short circuit could create a fire risk, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off.
Corrective Actions:
Kia will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the fuse(s) for the HECU. Kia recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.
Issue:
On certain vehicles, a part in the trunk release latch could fail. If this happens, the emergency trunk release located inside the trunk compartment may not work properly. This could prevent a person that is trapped inside the trunk from opening it.
Safety Risk:
If a person is closed inside the trunk compartment, they may not be able to get out. This could create a risk of injury.
Corrective Actions:
Kia will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the trunk latch base subassembly.
Issue:
On certain vehicles, the brake master cylinder could fail and cause reduced braking. If this happens, the driver may experience increased brake pedal travel and a change in brake pedal feel (soft or low pedal).
Safety Risk:
Reduced brake performance can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective Actions:
Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the brake master cylinder.

On certain vehicles, the rear outboard seat belts Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) may disengage when used with certain child seats. If this occurs the child seat will only be restrained by the Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) function. As a result certain child seats may not be properly secured. Correction: Dealers will replace both rear outboard seat belt assemblies.
Certain vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of CMVSS 210.2. The child restraint fixture anchor may contact the rear seat back frame. This interference prevents the forward most portion of the anchor from adequately penetrating the child lower anchors. In the event of a crash, if the child seat is not properly secured, personal injury or death could occur. Correction: Dealers will replace the child lower anchors.
Certain vehicle may have a manufacturing flaw that could cause the wheels to crack under long term driving fatigue. If cracks occur, wheel noise and vibration will result, becoming progressively worse. If the crack is severe, the wheel could separate from the vehicle which could result in a loss of vehicle control and a crash. Correction: Dealers will replace all four wheels.
On certain vehicles, the fuel intake nipple of the fuel distributor is subject to fracture or cracking during removal of the quick connect coupling securing the main fuel tube assembly to the fuel intake nipple, or when force is accidentally applied to the intake nipple during the vehicle assembly process or during engine compartment repairs. If this occurs, fuel leakage can result and fire may occur if an ignition source is present. Correction: Dealer will install a redesigned fuel distributor and main fuel tube assembly.
