History/Overview
Kia's Niro is a compact wagon built on a dedicated electrified vehicle platform that underpins gas-electric hybrid and fully electric versions (covered in separate buyer's guide entries), along with the in-between plug-in hybrid you're reading about here. The Niro is a relatively new model, having been introduced in 2017.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
A 2020 update brings refreshed styling, and some new technology, including a standard 8.0-inch infotainment display that options to a 10.25-inch unit in cars with navigation. Kia has also added a few new driver assist and active safety features.
Available Trims
Kia offers the Niro PHEV in EX Premium and SX Touring trim levels. Both use a 1.6L gas four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, which are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
Standard Features
All Niro PHEV models come with 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic on/off headlights, fog lights, LED daytime running lights and taillights, passive keyless entry, heated/power-folding side mirrors, chrome door moulding, and roof rails.
The cabin is kitted out with a sunroof, combo cloth/leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar, heated front seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, LED lighting, and leather-trimmed steering wheel (heated) and shift lever.
Standard technology features include an 8.0-inch infotainment display, sound system with USB input and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, wireless smartphone charging, drive mode selector, a 7.0-inch gauge cluster display, and UVO connected car services.
Niro PHEV's suite of standard safety gear comprises adaptive cruise control, tire pressure monitoring, blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert, lane keep and lane follow assists, driver attention alert, and forward collision warning with avoidance assist.
SX Touring trim adds LED headlights and fog lights, aero-blade wipers, chrome exterior door handles, leather upholstery, driver's seat memory, ventilated front and heated rear seats, navigation in a 10.25-inch display, an upgraded stereo, a 110-volt power outlet, and front and rear parking sensors.
Fuel Economy
Kia's fuel consumption estimates for the Niro PHEV are 4.9/5.3 L/100 km (city/highway) when running in gas-electric hybrid mode, and 2.2 Le/100 km in electric mode.
Competition
Kia's PHEV competition comes from vehicles like the Ford Fusion Energi, Mini's Countryman S E, the Honda Clarity, and Toyota's Prius Prime. Kia's Hyundai Motor Group parent offers a couple of its own competitive models in PHEV versions of the Sonata and Optima family sedans.
