Aging but capable, Jeep’s Patriot is a glimpse of the past having been in production for nearly 10 years. Fraternal twin to the Compass and sibling of the now-defunct Caliber, the Patriot offers up size, space, and class-leading off-road abilities at a price that undercuts most of its rivals.
As with the Compass, Jeep has shifted around the model lineup now that the subcompact Renegade has arrived. As such, the top-of-the-line Limited trim has been nixed – as have most of its options. The High Altitude Package, formerly an option, now becomes its own trim level. Meanwhile, the mid-grade North trim receives standard Bluetooth and satellite radio, plus there’s a new colour: Mojave Sand.
The Patriot also receives a new 75th Anniversary Edition, celebrating Jeep’s big birthday. Bronze-painted trim, 17-inch wheels, and unique leather upholstery are all included as a part of this range-topping trim.
The Patriot is available with two engines. The base Sport trim comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor that develops 158 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque; it’s yoked to a five-speed manual or a CVT. It comes exclusively with 2WD. There’s also a bigger 2.4-litre four-cylinder which makes 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque, that can be had with either a five-speed manual, a six-speed automatic, or on models equipped with the Off-Road Group II, a CVT that can mimic a low-range transfer case. 2WD and 4WD are available in this configuration; the CVT comes paired with 4WD.
The 2016 Jeep Patriot starts at $19,495 and goes to $30,030 for the 75th Anniversary Edition.
