For 2007, the Jeep Liberty line-up drops from three models to two, with the discontinuation of the mid-range Renegade; the optional CRD turbodiesel model is gone as well. A tire pressure monitoring system becomes standard on Limited; on the exterior, the Liberty has shed Deep Beryl Green, Atlantic Blue and Dark Khaki, and added Jeep Green.
Available as the Sport or Limited, the Liberty uses a 3.7-litre V6 with six-speed manual transmission that’s base on the Sport, or four-speed automatic that’s optional on the Sport and standard on the Limited. The manual comes with Command-Trac part-time four-wheel drive, the autobox with Selec-Trac full-time four-wheel drive.
Features on the Sport include 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, fog lamps, black roof rack side rails, full-length front console, floor mats, keyless entry, speed-sensitive power locks, engine immobilizer, cloth seats, 65/35 folding rear seat, power windows, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability program, and CD stereo with six speakers.
The Limited adds 17-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors, premium cloth seats, cargo cover, security alarm, cruise control, and tire pressure warning lamp. A Limited G Package adds auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated mirrors, garage door opener, vehicle information centre, heated leather-faced seats, six-way power front seats, tire pressure monitoring display system, and six-CD changer.
The Liberty is coming up to a complete makeover, and so this model cuts back for 2007; it’s a shame to lose the diesel, though, as the V6 is strong but relatively thirsty for its size. The Liberty offers an upright driving position with excellent visibility, a surprisingly small turning radius, and plenty of cargo space for its size. Its short wheelbase gives it a choppy ride and it tends to feel top-heavy with its high centre of gravity. Expect dealers to offer incentives to move out the last ones when the new models come out.
