History/Overview
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is the first-ever plug-in hybrid version of the brand’s upscale, mid-size SUV model. It’s the second plug-in model from Jeep, following a Wrangler 4xe unveiled as a 2021 model.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is all-new this year as part of the model’s all-new, fifth-generation lineup. A three-row Grand Cherokee L – introduced last year – is covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
Available Trims
Jeep offers the Grand Cherokee 4xe in base, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trims. All are powered by a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed transmission, and four-wheel drive.
Standard Features
Base trim comes with 18-inch wheels, passive keyless entry, LED headlights/fog lights, power-folding side mirrors, and a panoramic sunroof. Inside, there’s leather/suede upholstery, digital gauges, a heated steering wheel with electric position adjustments, dual-zone A/C, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, navigation, nine-speaker audio, a power tailgate, an auto-dimming mirror, front-passenger touchscreen, and wireless phone charging.
Safety-wise, the 4xe’s base trim comes with blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision mitigation, rear parking sensors, 360-degree cameras, rain-sensing wipers, and an intersection collision alert.
Trailhawk gets hitch-zoom and off-road cameras, a limited slip rear differential, a disconnecting front stabilizer bar, air suspension, skid plates, and all-terrain tires.
Overland builds on the base trim, gaining a driver’s side auto-dimming mirror, a 19-speaker McIntosh stereo, a hands-free tailgate, approach lighting, 20-inch wheels, air suspension, Nappa leather, multi-colour interior lighting, and trailer hitch camera views.
Summit gets a two-tone colourway, massaging front seats, four-zone A/C, side distance warning, highway drive assist, drowsy driver alert, and park assist.
Finally, Summit Reserve adds 21-inch wheels, ventilated rear seats, Palermo leather, and a deluxe headliner.
Key Options
A luxury tech group II brings a digital rearview mirror, auto-dimming driver’s side mirror, Capri leather, ventilated front seats, passive keyless, intersection collision assist, park assist, and an off-road camera. A rear-seat video package is available starting here, too.
An advanced “protech” group adds, among other things, night vision and surround-view cameras. A “protech” III pack brings a head-up display, active driving assist, and night vision.
Fuel Economy
Jeep’s fuel consumption estimates for the Grand Cherokee are 10.3/9.7 L/100 km (city/highway) in hybrid driving, and 4.2 Le/100 km in EV mode, in which Jeep promises 42 km of range.
Competition
With the Grand Cherokee 4xe, Jeep goes up against a specific – but small -- group of upscale, mid-size SUVs, including the Volvo XC90 Recharge, Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring, BMW X4 xDrive45e, and Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid.
