The Jeep Cherokee is one of the iconic brand’s most versatile models, a compact SUV that is as good at plying paved roads as it is venturing off them. The current Cherokee platform was introduced in 2014 and significantly refreshed in 2019.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2023, Jeep has cut the Cherokee lineup to just two trim levels – Altitude and Trailhawk – and added a handful of standard features to each.
Available Trims
As mentioned above, Jeep offers the Cherokee in Altitude and Trailhawk trims. Altitude models are powered by a 2.4L four-cylinder engine, and Trailhawk uses a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder. Both engines are mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Standard Features
Altitude’s standard kit includes a power tailgate, auto on/off LED headlights, LED taillights/fog lights, heated side mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, passive keyless entry, and rain-sensing wipers with de-icer. Inside, there’s a 7.0-inch driver info display, dual-zone A/C, an auto-dimming mirror, integrated garage remote, leather upholstery, heated/power-adjustable front seats, a heated steering wheel, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation.
Cherokee’s basic safety suite comprises automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, forward collision mitigation, lane keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, automated park assist, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Trailhawk adds low-range off-road gearing, 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, ventilated front seats, and all-weather carpets.
Key Options
Cherokee extras start with an Elite package available on both trims. In Trailhawk models, it adds a hands-free tailgate, dual-pane sunroof, and an upgraded stereo; in the Altitude trim, this group also adds ventilated seats and front-seat memory settings.
Trailhawk buyers can add a trailering package with upgraded engine and transmission cooling, a Class III hitch receiver, trailer wiring, and a full-size spare tire.
Fuel Economy
Jeep’s fuel consumption estimates for the Cherokee start at 11.2/8.0 L/100 km (city/highway) for Altitude trim. The Trailhawk configuration is rated for 11.8/9.2 L/100 km.
Competition
The Jeep Cherokee stands out in the compact SUV class for its above-average off-road capabilities. Still, it compares nicely to the Toyota RAV4 Trail, Subaru Forester, Chevrolet Equinox, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, VW Tiguan, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage, and Mazda CX-5.
