After a successful eight-year run, the XF enters its second-generation for 2016.
Jaguar has taken an iterative approach to the new XF’s styling: it’s familiar, but sleeker and cleaner. It’s also very similar in nature to the forthcoming XE compact, the brand’s 3 Series fighter.
But styling isn’t the only thing the XF shares with the XE. It also shares the same aluminum-intensive platform which helps shed 120 kg of weight, offer a near 50-50 weight distribution, and boost rigidity by 28% over the outgoing car. Overall, the new XF is seven millimetres shorter than the outgoing model, but gains 53 mm between the wheels for greater rear-seat legroom. A lower mounted rear seat ensures headroom isn’t an issue for rear-seat riders.
Inside, the XF receives plenty of new technology including two all-new InTouch infotainment systems, an available full-TFT instrument cluster, laser head-up display, and more. The iconic Jaguar rotary gearshift knob and swiveling air vents make a return, too. Proving Jaguar is as technologically sophisticated as its German and Japanese rivals, the XF can be equipped with parking assist, full-speed adaptive radar cruise control with queue assist, driver drowsing monitor, and all-surface progress control which acts as a sort of low-speed cruise control for slippery terrain.
For now, the XF will launch in Canada with standard all-wheel drive, and one powertrain – a 3.0-litre supercharged V6. In standard 35t form, it produces 340 hp, with S models receiving 40 additional horsepower. The more powerful model can hit 100 km/h in less than 5.5 seconds. An eight-speed ZF automatic is standard. Although the four-cylinder and performance R model have been discontinued, expect them to return to the product range.
The XF is available in 35t Premium, 35t Prestige, 35t R-Sport, and S models.
