As one of the oldest designs in the mid-size luxury sedan category, the Q70 is on the small side for a class of vehicle intended to offer comfortable transportation for four people. Rather that design a new car to address that shortcoming in a marketplace shifting toward crossovers and SUVs, Infiniti took a more cost-conscious approach in 2015 and stretched the car's wheelbase to create the Q70L.
Still, Infiniti doesn't seem keen on doing much more to change the Q70L's limited market penetration: for 2019, there are no updates to the Q70 (nor to the standard-length Q70, covered in a separate buyer's guide entry).
Back in 2015, when the regular-sized Q70 could better compete on interior space with its German, Japanese and American competition, the L's stretched wheelbase was a nod to Infiniti's lack of a true flagship like the BMW 7 Series or Benz S-Class. Now, however, the extra few inches of rear-seat legroom simply makes the Q70L a more competitive mid-sizer.
A pair of trim levels is available: the Q70 3.7 AWD Luxe uses a 3.7L V6 that makes 330 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, and the 5.6 AWD Luxe gets a 5.6L V8 good for 416 hp and 406 lb-ft. Both come matched with a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Standard kit includes Infiniti's InTouch navigation system with InTouch services, 16-speaker Bose sound system. 360-degree exterior camera system, front and rear parking sonar, leather seating, climate controlled front seats and a heated and leather-trimmed steering wheel, passive keyless entry, power rear door closers, heated rear seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, power rear sunshade, sunroof, 18-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, silver powdered ash wood interior trim, 10-way power front seats and power steering column adjustments.
The Q70L also comes standard with big brakes that are an option in the entry-level Q70, along with a selection of advanced safety features that includes blind spot monitoring and intervention, forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane departure warning and prevention and backup collision intervention.
Considering its age, the Q70 is still a nice luxury car that boasts competent performance characterized by good straight-line acceleration and a nice exhaust note. One thing that gives away its dated powertrain is Infiniti's fuel consumption estimates, which are less thrifty than the class average at 13.2/9.8 L/100 km (city/highway).
