All-new models in 2006, the Infiniti M35 and M45 receive some trim changes for 2007. New option packages include an Ultra Premium Package, and new Technology Package, while the Advanced Technology Package has been revised, and now includes a 5.1-channel Bose Studio Surround stereo with console-mounted DVD drive and intelligent cruise control.
Non-Sport models receive new optional 18-inch five-spoke wheels; climate-controlled seats are standard on M45 models and M35x, and available on M35; adaptive front lighting is standard on M45 and available on M35 models; and a full-size spare is no longer available.
The M series, which Infiniti calls a luxury performance sedan, is available as the M35 with a 3.5-litre V6, and as the M45, with a 4.5-litre V8. All use a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. The M35 is available in rear-wheel drive as the M35, and in all-wheel drive as the M35x; the M45 is rear-wheel only, and is available as the M45 and M45 Sport.
Features on the M35 and M35x include 18-inch alloy wheels, power sunroof, LED taillights, fog lights, self-leveling bi-Xenon headlamps, heated mirrors with reverse tilt-down, Intelligent Key with pushbutton start, voice recognition, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth hands-free phone system, cargo net, rearview monitor, leather-wrapped power tilt and telescopic wheel, leather interior, auto-dimming mirror with compass, 10-way power climate-controlled seats with dual memory system linked to the key fob, garage door opener, six-CD/MP3 stereo and tire pressure monitoring system.
The M45 adds premium Bose Studio Surround six-CD/MP3 stereo and DVD entertainment system, while the M45 Sport adds 19-inch wheels, brake assist with preview, sport seats, sport-stitched steering wheel, intelligent cruise control, DVD-based navigation system, aluminum pedal accents, aluminum interior trim, sport-tuned suspension with rear active steer, and lane departure warning system.
The Infiniti M is based on the rear-wheel drive FM (front-midship) architecture used on the G35 and FX sport utility vehicles, but with some 60 per cent of its components enhanced for the company’s premium sedan. To optimize handling, the engine is positioned behind the front axle for better balance; the M45 Sport’s rear active steer adjusts the geometry of the rear suspension according to steering input and vehicle speed, to enhance low-speed manoeuvres and high-speed stability. This is a well-done luxury vehicle at a relatively modest price.
