Following the introduction of an all-wheel-drive model in 2004, the Infiniti G35 receives a facelift and a horsepower boost in 2005.
Cosmetic changes include a new instrument panel and console area, new hood and trunk, new front and rear bumpers, body-coloured side sills, restyled headlight lenses, new dual-circle taillights and new seven-spoke alloy wheels.
The 3.5-litre V6 receives a 20 hp boost to 280 when coupled with an automatic, and 18 hp with a six-speed manual transmission to 298 hp in the new Aero Package, which also includes sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels, rear spoiler and viscous limited-slip differential has been introduced. All two-wheel-drive models receive larger brakes for 2005.
The sedan comes in the 2WD G35 Luxury and AWD G35x. The G35x’s system is also used on the Infiniti FX45 and FX35 sport utility vehicles; it transfers optimum torque to individual wheels according to road and driving conditions, and comes with a “Snow-Mode” switch which fixes the torque distribution at 50/50 up to 19 km/h and reduces throttle sensitivity for better traction on slippery roads at low speeds.
Both models include such features as xenon headlights with integrated fog lights, speed-sensitive steering, 17-inch alloy wheels, tire pressure monitor, heated mirrors, leather interior, eight-way power driver’s seat and four-way power passenger seat, trunk pass-through, six-CD Bose stereo with seven speakers, and automatic temperature control.
Available options include a rear spoiler, power sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, rosewood interior trim, dual HVAC control and DVD-based navigation system with retracting screen.
The Infiniti is one of the few Japanese entries in this category with rear-wheel-drive, and it has proven itself to be a contender in a category usually headed by German sedans. The close-coupled six-speed manual is smooth and effortless, and the well-tuned suspension is up to the task of taking it on winding roads. The AWD version makes for even better tracking around corners and for extra security through Canadian winters. The Acura TL and Cadillac CTS 3.6 are excellent road cars as well but with higher base prices.
