Hyundai's funky coupe with an extra door offers coupe styling on the one side and four-door practicality on the other. And we mean that literally. One of the car's main selling points is that rear passenger-side door that gives you curb-side access to the back seat. It makes loading people and stuff in much easier, but the driver's side has that uninterrupted sporty coupe/hatch style. It's quirky, but it works.
Headroom in the back seat is cramped, as you'd expect in a car this size, but thanks to the extra door the access is better than average. The Veloster offers up a little over 980L of rear cargo space with the seats folded, with the hatch offering a big opening to that space.
The Veloster got a refresh for 2016, which traded the six-speed automatic for a seven-speed dual clutch transmission on the turbo and a six-speed dual clutch on the base car. The quicker shifting box offers performance and fuel economy increases. The seats get more bolstering and there are new wheel designs.
The base engine in the Veloster is a 1.6L four that makes 132 hp and 120 lb-ft of torque. On top of the dual-clutch, it can be had with a six-speed manual. If you want to fulfil the Veloster's looks with power, the Turbo model adds a turbocharger to the 1.6L four to make 201 hp and 195 lb-ft. It also has active sound that adds to the intake and exhaust noise in the cabin.
The base car offers 17-inch alloys, power windows, a 7.0-inch six-speaker display audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a leather-wrapped wheel. The SE adds heated front seats, satellite radio, and a back-up camera. Veloster Tech comes with 18-inch alloys, leatherette seat bolsters with power lumbar, a premium audio system with navigation, and a heated steering wheel. Veloster Turbo takes the Tech trim and adds different bodywork as well as the more powerful engine. It has leather sport seats and a sport instrument cluster.
The Veloster is rated to get 8.8 L/100 km city, 6.7 highway with the base engine and manual, 8.3/6.5 with the automatic. The turbo is rated for 9.4/7.0 and 8.9/7.1 with the manual and automatic respectively.
