History/Overview
Family sedans aren’t the big deal they used to be, as much of their market share has been usurped by crossovers. Still, Hyundai hopes to keep its Sonata mid-size car going as long as possible; a 2020 redesign that injected big style should help.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
Changes to the 2023 Sonata are in trim. Notably, all versions now come standard with a 10.25-inch touchscreen that was optional last year.
Available Trims
Hyundai offers the Sonata in 2.5L Preferred, 1.6T Sport, and 2.5T N Line trim levels. As their designations suggest, each is built around a different motor: the range starts with a 2.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder and moves up through a 1.6L turbo mill to culminate in a 2.5L turbo four-cylinder. All three engines come with an eight-speed transmission, with the 2.5T’s being a dual-clutch unit.
Hybrid versions of the Sonata are covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
Standard Features
The Sonata 2.5L Preferred comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights/taillights, heated front seats, six-speaker audio, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, dual-zone A/C, heated steering wheel, passive keyless entry, and a hands-free trunk.
Sonata’s standard safety package comprises adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind spot/rear cross-traffic collision mitigation, forward collision mitigation, lane keeping/following assist, safe exit warning, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert.
1.6T Sport gets 19-inch wheels, leatherette upholstery, a power driver’s seat, a 12-speaker stereo, and a panoramic roof.
2.5T N Line models get rain-sensing wipers, heated rear seats, Nappa leather, head-up display, wireless phone charging, digital gauges, ambient lighting, surround-view monitor, an auto-dimming mirror, blind spot camera, and highway driving assist.
Fuel Economy
Hyundai’s fuel consumption estimates start at 8.8/6.4 L/100 km (city/highway) for 2.5L Preferred. 1.6T Sport is rated at 9.0/6.5 L/100 km, and 2.5T N Line’s rankings are 10.1/7.2 L/100 km.
Competition
The Sonata’s competitors include the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Kia K5, Toyota Camry, and Chevrolet Malibu.
