History/Overview
Hyundai is going all-in on its N range of high-performance vehicles, which to this point has centered around the Veloster compact hatchback – a car that has proven itself worthy of direct comparison to more established sport compacts like the VW Golf R, Honda Civic Type R, and Subaru WRX.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
But if you want a look at what’s to come from this Korean brand, check out the Kona N, an all-new speed-focused version of the company’s otherwise pedestrian subcompact crossover.
Available Trims
The Kona N comes in a single trim, powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and front-wheel drive.
Other versions of the Kona – gas and electric – are covered in separate buyer’s guide entries.
Standard Features
The Hyundai Kona N comes with 19-inch wheels, LED headlights with automatic high beams, passive keyless entry, and an electronically controlled suspension. Inside, there are heated leather/suede seats with driver’s power adjustments, a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, dual-zone A/C, digital gauges, and wireless phone charging.
Also included is forward collision mitigation, blind spot/rear cross traffic collision avoidance, lane follow/lane keep assist, driver attention/safe exit warning, and rear parking sensors.
Fuel Economy
Hyundai’s fuel consumption estimates are 11.8/8.7 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
At the moment, the Kona N has no direct competitors. The closest model to cross-shop in its price range is the Mazda CX-30 Turbo, which is less about all-out performance than a combination of relaxed power and upscale accommodations.
