History/Overview
Hyundai’s Ioniq nameplate dates back to 2017, when this compact hatchback was introduced as the brand’s first dedicated electrified vehicle model. The Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid you’re reading about here is sold alongside a conventional hybrid covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2022, there are no changes to the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid, but its all-electric linemate is gone, effectively replaced by the larger, edgier Ioniq 5 crossover. Formerly known as the Ioniq Electric Plus, this year you’ll see this car referred to alternately as the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid, or simply the Ioniq.
Available Trims
Hyundai sells the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid in Essential, Preferred, and Ultimate trims, all of which use a 1.6L gas engine and an electric motor, which are connected to the front wheels through a six-speed transmission.
Standard Features
Essential trim is fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels, auto on/off headlights, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, adaptive cruise, and dual-zone A/C. You also get forward collision mitigation with pedestrian/cyclist detection, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning, and lane following assist.
Preferred models gain LED headlights/taillights, heated rear seats, passive keyless entry, a sunroof, rear parking sensors, and a heated steering wheel. Safety adds include blind spot monitoring, lane change assist, and rear cross traffic alert.
Ultimate adds power-folding side mirrors, leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, eight-speaker audio, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, wireless phone charging, and a 7.0-inch gauge display. Ultimate’s sole safety upgrade is a highway driving assist function.
Fuel Economy
Hyundai’s energy consumption estimates are 4.5L/100 km when running as a gas-electric hybrid, and 2.0Le/100 km in all-electric mode. The Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid’s promised electric driving range is 47 km.
Competition
Hyundai markets the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid as a competitor to the Toyota Prius Prime.
