For 2015, Hyundai has slimmed down the Genesis Coupe product line. The base 2.0T powertrain has been discontinued, leaving the 3.8-litre naturally aspirated V6 as the default choice. As such, Hyundai has reshuffled the trim lines for the Genesis Coupe. The sporty R-Spec is now the default trim; Premium and range-topping GT trims remain.
Other additions to the Genesis Coupe include a much-needed reverse camera and a larger touchscreen infotainment display that offers higher resolution than the dated dot-matrix display previously used. The mid-grade Premium gets added luxury features (leather upholstery, push-button start), while the range-topping GT model gains acoustic rear parking sensors. Despite the added equipment and bigger engines, the price gain on a Premium trim level is less than $1,000.
With standard Brembo brakes, a sport-tuned suspension setup, lively steering and good grip, the Genesis Coupe is by far the most satisfying Hyundai to drive on the market. Its balanced rear-wheel drive chassis is easy to exploit thanks to the powerful direct-injected 3.8-litre V6 that can easily set the rear tires alight. With 348 hp on tap, the Genesis Coupe offers more performance and better acceleration than the Mustang EcoBoost, Nissan 370Z NISMO, and yes, even the BMW 435i. All Genesis Coupes drive the rear wheels via a six-speed manual; an eight-speed automatic with paddles is offered as an option on Premium and GT trims.
Features on the 3.8 R-Spec include 19-inch alloy wheels, Brembo brakes, front strut tower brace, sport calibrated suspension, high-performance summer tires, performance seats with sport bolsters, Torsen limited-slip rear differential, rear spoiler, automatic climate control, outside temperature display, wiper de-icer, tilt and telescoping steering column, six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio, satellite radio, iPod/USB/auxiliary input jacks, Bluetooth, body colour dual power-heated mirrors, centre console with armrest, chrome-tipped dual exhaust, cloth upholstery, six-way manual driver’s seat, fog lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, Supervision instrument cluster, power door locks with remote keyless entry and alarm, power windows with driver/front passenger express down and auto-up with pinch protection, projector beam headlamps, LED tail lights, 50/50 split folding ear seat, solar tint glass, steering wheel mounted audio and cruise control switches.
3.8 Premium adds 7.0-inch display audio system with navigation, reverse camera, 10-speaker 360-watt Infinity sound system, HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights, leather upholstery, proximity key with push-button start, heated front seats, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, power driver's seat with power lumbar support, and a power sunroof. Deletes front strut tower brace and rear spoiler. Replaces 19-inch wheels with 18-inch wheels, Torsen limited-slip differential with regular open differential, aluminum pedals with regular pedals, and sport suspension with regular suspension.
3.8GT builds on Premium and adds aluminum foot pedals, engine cover, auto-dimming rearview mirror, garage door opener, metal-grain interior accents, illuminated driver door scuff plate, acoustic film glass, leather-wrapped parking brake, rear parking sensors, and passenger sunvisor extension. It also adds R-Spec performance components including Torsen limited-slip differential, 19-inch wheels with summer tires, aluminum pedals, and sport suspension.
