PinkMonkeyBird Good car, but poor interior July 31, 2019 Hatchback Preferred
Overall Score
Good car at a good price, but the interior feels very plastic. Most things are not padded, including armrests, just rigid plastic everywhere, which tends to scuff and scratch very easily. I've only have the car around 4 months and the plastic around the ignition is pretty beat up. I can't imagine I've missed the whole more than a dozen times but that material is just so susceptible to being scratched. Also very noticeable at foot height if you ever bump your shoe against the door. Overall I have few complaints but that interior is a major drawback

Issue: On certain vehicles, brake fluid could leak into the control module for the antilock brake system (ABS) and cause it to short circuit. Note: This recall replaces recall R0246 (Transport Canada recall number 2023-527). For the Sonata model, only the Sonata Hybrid model is affected by this recall. Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the fuse for the ABS module. Hyundai recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.

Issue: On certain vehicles, a part in the trunk release latch could fail. If this happens, the emergency trunk release located inside the trunk compartment may not work properly. This could prevent a person that is trapped inside the trunk from opening it. Note: For the 2016 model year Sonata, only the Sonata Hybrid is affected by this recall. Safety Risk: If a person is closed inside the trunk compartment, they may not be able to get out. This could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the trunk latch assembly.

Certain vehicles may not comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 208 - Occupant Protection in Frontal Impacts. The center rear seat belt is equipped with a release mechanism that allows both the lap and the shoulder portion of the seat belt to be detached at the lower anchorage point by using a key-like tool. As the rear center seat is non-folding, this is contrary to the requirements of the standard. Correction: A production change has been undertaken to remedy this non-compliance condition. No corrective recall action is required as the non-compliance condition is deemed to be non-safety related.

On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may fail and cause intermittent operation of the brake lights. Failure of the brake lights to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed could result in a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the switch with a new model.

On certain vehicles, The Occupant Detection System may have been incorrectly programmed. In cold ambient temperatures, the system may fail to deactivate the front passenger airbag when an child restraint seat occupies the front passenger seat and also illuminate the airbag warning lamp in the instrument cluster. This could result in injury. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the SRS Occupant Detection System.

On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may have been incorrectly installed during vehicle assembly. This could prevent proper brake lamp operation. Failure of the brake lamps to illuminate when the brakes are applied may result in the following road users being unaware of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury or death. A malfunction of the switch may also cause the brake lamps to remain illuminated when the brake pedal is released. Additionally, a faulty switch may affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock on automatic transmission-equipped vehicles so that the transmission shifter would not be able to be shifted out of PARK position. It may also cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) light to illuminate, and it may not deactivate the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed. Correction: Dealers will replace the stop lamp switch assembly.

On certain vehicles, driving for extended periods in extremely cold ambient temperatures can cause moisture to freeze inside the throttle body idle speed control circuit and in the throttle body bore, resulting in a higher than normal engine idle speed, and the throttle valve not closing fully. This condition may result in reduced braking effectiveness on deceleration, which in turn could result in a vehicle crash. Correction: Dealers will install a modified PCV hose and, on manual transmission equipped vehicles without air conditioning, install a condenser cover.

Certain vehicles have an insufficient amount of lubrication between the windshield wiper motor drive arm pivot and the wiper linkage dust cover that may bind and cause the wiper linkage to separate from the windshield wiper motor. If this occurs the windshield wiper motor will still operate but the windshield wipers will not function. This condition can result in reduced driver visibility during inclement weather and a possible crash. Correction: Dealers will replace the rubber boot (dust cover) which covers the ball joint connection and lubricate the new boot where it contacts the wiper arm.
