History/Overview
The GMC Terrain was introduced in 2010 to give GM’s truck brand an entry in the lucrative compact crossover segment. A second-generation design came along in 2018 with smoother styling that was refreshed last year.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2023, the Terrain gets a new engine: as before, it’s a 1.5L turbo, but makes 5 more horsepower for a new total of 175.
Available Trims
GMC offers the Terrain in SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali trim levels. All use the new 1.5L turbo four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed transmission. SLE starts out with front-wheel drive, and can be optioned with AWD, which is standard in the rest of the range.
Standard Features
SLE trims starts with 17-inch alloy wheels, auto on/off LED headlights, dual-zone A/C, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, six-speaker audio, 7.0-inch touchscreen, fold-flat passenger seat, an auto-dimming interior mirror, passive keyless entry, and wireless smartphone integration.
SLE also includes a safety package of forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and automatic high beams.
SLT adds 18-inch wheels, fog lights, a hands-free tailgate, a 110-volt power outlet, a power passenger seat, an 8.0-inch infotainment display, heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, and an integrated garage remote.
AT4 reverts to 17-inch wheels and gets an underbody skid plate.
Finally, Denali gets an enhanced-ride suspension, 19-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, automatic park assist, surround-vision cameras, rear park assist, digital gauge display, and a seven-speaker stereo. You also get navigation, a head-up display, blind spot monitor with lane change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, ventilated front seats, and wireless phone charging.
Key Options
A pro grade package adds navigation, a sunroof, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen; in some trims, this package also adds a seven-speaker stereo.
A tech pack brings park assist, surround vision, head-up display; the pro safety plus package adds adaptive cruise, and rear park assist.
If you want a sunroof in Terrain Denali, add the black diamond edition package.
Fuel Economy
GMC’s fuel consumption estimates are 9.7/8.1 L/100 km (city/highway) with front-wheel drive, and 9.9/8.3 L/100 km with AWD.
Competition
The Terrain competes against the Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander and Eclipse Cross, Ford Escape, Volkswagen Tiguan, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Kia Sportage, Chevrolet Equinox, Mazda CX-5, and Subaru Forester.
