History/Overview
The Terrain is GMC's compact crossover, which shares its underpinnings and drivertrains with the Chevrolet Equinox. GMC introduced the Terrain in 2010 and redesigned it in 2018.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
New for 2020 is a standard suite of driver assist features called GMC Pro Safety. It comprises forward collision alert with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist with lane departure warning, following distance indicator and automatic high beam headlights.
Terrain Denali gets an updated suspension for a better ride, and last year's Black Edition has been renamed the Elevation Edition.
Finally, GMC has dropped an optional diesel engine from the Terrain lineup.
Available Trims
GMC offers the Terrain in SLE, SLT and Denali trims. SLE uses a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and SLT and Denali come with a more powerful 2.0L engine. SLE is standard with FWD and optional with AWD, while SLT and Denali get AWD as standard. All Terrain models use a nine-speed automatic transmission.
Standard Features
SLE comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels, automatic on/off headlights, body-colour door handles and mirror caps, heated side mirrors, HID headlights, LED taillights, two 12-volt power outlets, eight-way power driver's seat, active noise cancellation, cruise control, driver information centre, heated front seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, passive keyless entry, leather-trimmed steering wheel, rear seat reminder, cloth upholstery, tire pressure monitoring, hill descent control, forward collision alert with pedestrian detection and automatic braking, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, following distance indicator, automatic high beams and a six-speaker stereo with 7.0-inch touchscreen display.
SLT adds 19-inch wheels, fog lights, hands-free power tailgate, auto-dimming side mirrors, 110-volt power outlet, six-way power front passenger seat with lumbar, 8.0-inch infotainment display, interior ambient lighting, HD backup camera, heated steering wheel, perforated leather upholstery and satellite radio.
Finally, Denali gets trim-specific wheels, chrome door handles and mirror caps, rear park assist, blind spot monitoring with lane change alert and rear cross traffic alert, safety alert seat, LED headlights, body-colour lower exterior trim, navigation, Bose seven-speaker stereo with HD radio, heated rear seats and ventilated front seats.
Key Options
SLE and SLT trims can be had with an infotainment package that brings navigation and (to the SLE) a larger touchscreen.
Denali gets the option of an advanced safety package of automated parking assist and surround-view exterior cameras. A driver alert package adds adaptive cruise control to the Denali model.
Fuel Economy
GMC's fuel consumption estimates for the Terrain are 9.6/8.3 L/100 km (city/highway) with the 1.5L engine and AWD, and 11.2/9.0 with the 2.0L and AWD. With the 1.5L and FWD, ratings are 9.2/7.9 L/100 km.
Competition
The GMC Terrain competes with a vast array of other compact crossovers. They include the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Chevrolet Equinox, Volkswagen Tiguan, Nissan Rogue, Dodge Journey and Ford Escape.
