Completely redesigned in 2007, the GMC Sierra undergoes only minor changes for 2008. The Sierra Classic, a 2007 carryover of the last-generation pickup, has been discontinued.
Also sold as the Chevrolet Silverado, the Sierra is offered in Regular, Extended and Crew Cab models, with three box lengths: short (5-foot-8), standard (6-foot-6) and long (8-foot), and in two- or four-wheel drive. Engine choices are a 4.3-litre V6, 4.8-litre V8, 5.3-litre V8, 6.0-litre V8, a 6.2-litre V8 exclusive to the Denali trim line, and a Duramax 6.6-litre V8 diesel in the 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty models. The 5.3-litre V8 can also be ordered as a flexible-fuel model, to run on E85 ethanol. The 4.3-, 4.8-, and 5.3-litre use a four-speed automatic transmission, as does the 6.0-litre in 1500 models; the 6.0-litre uses a six-speed Hydramatic in the 2500 and 3500 models, as does the 6.2-litre V8, while the diesel mates to a six-speed Allison automatic transmission.
Features on the WT (Work Truck) include 17-inch steel wheels, 40/20/40 split-bench front seat in cloth or vinyl, chrome bumpers, variable intermittent wipers, overhead console, vinyl flooring, driver information centre, tire pressure monitoring system, tilt column, AM/FM stereo, block heater, automatic headlamps, theft-deterrent system and OnStar. Extended and Crew Cab models also include air conditioning.
The SLE adds 17-inch chrome wheels, air conditioning, fog lamps, deep-tinted glass, power heated mirrors, cruise control, rear defogger, colour-keyed carpet with floor mats, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and temperature display, leather-wrapped wheel, illuminated visor mirrors, leather-wrapped wheel, power windows, power locks with keyless entry and CD/MP3 stereo.
The SLT adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, rear locking differential, remote starter, trailer tow package, power-folding mirrors with integrated turn signals and driver's side auto-dimming, heated washer fluid system, rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium instrument panel, garage door opener, ten-way power heated leather seats with memory, six-CD stereo, and XM Satellite Radio.
The Denali is a Crew Cab with AWD only and includes Denali-specific 18-inch polished aluminum wheels and chrome grille, twelve-way power seats, unique centre console with good grain trim, power-adjustable pedals, and rear parking assist.
The new Sierra All Terrain builds on the Z71 Off Road package and includes skid plates, high-capacity air cleaner, heavy-duty trailer package, unique Rancho Tenneco shocks, ebony cloth seating, and brushed metal appearance interior trim accents.
Like the new Silverado, the Sierra is a very well-done truck that is considerably improved over the model it replaces, with strong engines, high-quality interiors, a wide range of features and a full configuration of models, from a half-ton work truck to a fully-loaded diesel dual-wheel model. Two separate instrument panels are offered, a first for General Motors, with a choice of "Pure Pickup" or "Luxury".
Sierra also offers an innovative cargo management system, consisting of three rails that run the length of the box sides and forward box wall, with upper and lower tracks; dealer-ordered accessories fit into them, including storage boxes, sliding bed divider and bicycle rack.
