GMC's Savana trudges on for yet another year without any significant changes. New this year is optional navigation and OnStar 4G LTE connectivity. GMC's full-size van, along with its Chevrolet Express counterpart is the last of the old generation of large vans. The downside is larger, older, less efficient engines and interior design. It will hold less inside than a Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter, especially if either of those are the high-roof option. The upside is very well known cost of ownership, and the ability to tow up to 4,500 kg.
The Savana is available in 2500 and 3500 grades, and 3500 is available in standard wheelbase, or the 508 mm longer extended wheelbase. The van is also available in the single row of seats Cargo Van version, or the Passenger Van version which can seat 12 (regular) or up to 15 (extended). There are three choices of engines, a 4.8L V8 making 285 hp and 295 lb-ft, a 6.0L V8 that produces 342 hp and 373 lb-ft of torque, or on 3500 extended there is a 6.6 turbodiesel V8 that produces 260 hp and 525 lb-ft of torque. All three engines are connected to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Savana Cargo comes with 16-inch steel wheels with black painted bumpers. Chrome versions of both are available options. Cargo comes without side or rear windows but these can be optioned. Swing out passenger doors are standard with a sliding door available for ease of access. Air conditioning is standard as are power mirrors, an AM/FM stereo, power windows and locks. The seats are vinyl trimmed and the rear floor is a rubber mat. OnStar is optional as is a power driver seat, remote keyless entry, USB audio port, extra interior lighting, cruise control, and various other amenities to help make work easier.
Savana Passenger comes in LS and LT trims. LS gets 16-inch wheels with black bumpers, power locks, cruise, air conditioning, power windows and locks. An additional rear heater is standard along with manual seats. Full length windows are also standard. An improved stereo is optional, as are rear air conditioning, leather wrapped wheel, improved cloth front seats with power adjust, carpeted floors, and rear parking sensors with camera. LT adds chrome wheels, grille, and bumpers. Rear air is standard, as is rear carpet and remote keyless entry. Diesel models get a fuel burning auxiliary heater.
Savana is not rated for fuel economy due to its size.
