History/Overview
The GMC Canyon is one of General Motors’ two mid-size pickup truck offerings, the other being the Chevrolet Colorado that is covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry. The Canyon name dates back to 2004, when it replaced the Sonoma as GMC’s entry-level truck model. GMC designed the Canyon into its current generation in 2015.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
New this year is a Black Edition package that’s available with the Denali trim level and adds black wheels and other black exterior pieces.
Available Trims
GMC offers the Canyon in Elevation, AT4, and Denali trim levels. Engine options are a 2.5L gas four-cylinder, a 2.8L diesel four-cylinder, and a 3.6L gas V6. Four-cylinders come with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the V6 gets an eight-speed. Rear- and four-wheel drive are available.
Standard Features
Elevation models start with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lights, locking tailgate, six-speaker audio, a power driver’s seat, automatic A/C, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
AT4 gets smaller 17-inch wheels, but wearing all-terrain tires. Also included is an 8.0-inch touchscreen.
Denali models get 20-inch wheels, LED cargo box lighting, chrome exterior trim, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation, an upgraded stereo, a heated steering wheel, rear park assist, leather upholstery, and ventilated front seats.
Key Options
Available packages include an Elevation Premium group; an exterior convenience package; a driver alert package; and a skid plate pack that adds extra underbody protection.
Fuel Economy
GMC’s fuel consumption estimates for the Canyon start at 11.8/7.9 L/100 km (city/highway) with the diesel engine; 12.2/9.4 L/100 km with the gas four-cylinder; and 12.9/9.3 L/100 km for V6-powered trucks (all ratings are for 2WD models).
Competition
The Canyon’s competitors include the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, and Honda Ridgeline. Chevrolet’s very similar Colorado is also aimed at drivers shopping this category of truck.
