NEW FOR 2009:
- 3.0-litre V6 discontinued
- Class III trailer hitch standard on all series
- All stereos but base AM/FM have standard auxiliary input and MP3 capability
- Sirius satellite radio standard on all XL (except 2.3-litre), XLT, Sport and FX4 Off-Road models
For 2009, the Ford Ranger is unchanged, save for some additions to its stereo systems and a Class III trailer hitch on all models. The smaller 3.0-litre V6 has been discontinued, bringing the choice of engines from three to two.
Also sold as the Mazda B-Series, the Ford Ranger uses a 2.3-litre four-cylinder in the XL FEL (Fuel Economy Leader), and a 4.0-litre V6 in the XL, Sport, XLT and FX4 Off-Road models. All base with a five-speed manual that can be optioned to a five-speed automatic. All models are 4x2 or 4x4 except for the FX4 Off-Road, which is 4x4 only. The XL comes in Regular Cab with six- or seven-foot box, or SuperCab with six-foot box; all others use the SuperCab with six-foot box.
Features on the XL include 15-inch steel wheels, black front and rear step bumpers, black grille, manual mirrors with black caps, intermittent wipers, CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input and Sirius satellite radio, black vinyl floor covering, dome light, cloth 60/40 split seats, block heater, smoker's package, tire pressure monitoring system, and Class III trailer tow hitch receiver; the six-foot box includes bed rail and tailgate protectors. The SuperCab includes rear jump seats that can be optionally deleted.
The Sport adds body-colour front and rear bumpers, body-colour door handles, fog lamps, black grille with body-colour surround, manual mirrors with body-colour caps, and body-colour wheel-lip mouldings. The 4x2 version uses 15-inch alloy wheels, while the 4x4 also adds 16-inch alloy wheels, tow hooks, payload package, heavy-duty gas-charged shock absorbers, air conditioning, and skid plates.
The XLT adds chrome grille surround, manual mirrors with chrome caps, black door handles, colour-coordinated carpet and floor mats, tilt wheel, cruise control, visors with driver map strap and passenger mirror, chrome side step bars, and chrome exhaust tip.
The FX4 Off-Road adds 16-inch alloy wheels, Torsen limited-slip 4:10 rear axle, Dark Shadow Grey front and rear step bumpers, privacy glass, colour-keyed grille, power mirrors, sliding rear window, rear mud flaps, two-tone paint, two-tone cloth seats, centre floor console, rugged-texture vinyl flooring, vinyl floor mats, gas-charged shocks and skid plates.
Available options, depending on the model, include a bedliner, side step bars, bright trim group, six-CD stereo, and a power equipment package of power windows, locks, mirrors and keyless entry.
In a marketplace where most "compact" trucks have grown to midsize proportions, the Ranger retains its small footprint and is relatively inexpensive. Its base trim makes it perfect for those who want a utility truck for tough, dirty job sites.
The SuperCab comes with rear jump seats that can be folded down, but they're very tight and uncomfortable for adults, and are not suitable for use with infant or child booster seats.
