History/Overview
The Ford F-550 lives near the top of the F-Series Super Duty range, where it’s only available in the chassis cab configuration favoured by buyers who get custom bodies installed on their trucks.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
The main change to the F-550 for 2020 is the arrival of a 7.3L V8 engine, which replaces last year’s less-powerful 6.8L.Other news include the addition of standard automatic high beam headlights, the FordPass Connect Wi-Fi system and SYNC infotainment. SYNC 3 becomes standard in upper trims, and lane departure warning and forward collision warning and avoidance are optional.
Available Trims
Ford offers the F-550 in XL, XLT, and Lariat trims. Engines include a 6.7L diesel and the new 7.3L gas V8. You can also choose between regular, SuperCab and Crew Cab configurations, along with 2WD and 4WD. A 10-speed automatic transmission is included regardless of what other powertrain options you pick.
Standard Features
XL trim comes with 19.5-inch wheels and tires, air conditioning, a 2.3-inch productivity screen, a 4.2-inch infotainment display, two 12-volt power outlets, tilt-and-telescopic steering, six upfitter switches, a four-speaker stereo, SYNC infotainment, Wi-Fi, vinyl seating, black door handles, manual trailer-tow mirrors, and auto on/off headlights with rain-sensing wipers.
XLT adds a 4.2-inch productivity display, an 8.0-inch infotainment screen, power door locks and windows, a 110-volt power outlet, a five- or seven-speaker stereo (for regular and Super/Crew Cab respectively), SYNC 3 infotainment, cloth upholstery and heated side mirrors.

Key Options
XL offers a power equipment group and value and décor packages that bring the F-550’s basic convenience and appearance in line with the starting points of its better-equipped siblings. Other options include items like a heavy-duty towing package, a snowplot prep group, and first responder preparation packages.
Fuel Economy
Natural Resources Canada doesn’t require commercial vehicles to undergo its usual fuel consumption testing process, so Ford doesn’t publish ratings for the F-550.
Competition
The Ford F-550’s competitors are the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 5500, and Ram’s 5500.
