For some people, a one-ton pickup like the Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and Ram 3500 just isn't enough. Some people need more truck. Maybe it's to tow a massive camper, maybe it's to put boulders in the bed, maybe it's just to have the biggest pickup around.
For those people, Ford makes the F-450 pickup. A heavy-duty, crew cab, dual rear wheel monster of a truck. It can tow just under 16,000 kg with a fifth-wheel hitch and has a maximum payload of 2,418 kg.
The Ford Super Duty series was all-new for 2017, which means a more modern cabin and chassis than the competition. Not that anything other than a commercial-grade pickup really competes with this.
It's a truck that's intended to do work, but keep you comfortable all day. The F-450 is aimed at people towing camping, horse, and race car trailers. That means that long-distance comfort is as important as the massive tow capability.
To that end, Ford has added the Limited trim to the F-450 for 2018. It's a top-spec luxury trim with a special grille, wood trim, LED headlights, and as much hide in the interior as can fit on the trailer.
Unlike lesser super-duty trucks, this one is crew-cab, long wheelbase, dual-rear-wheel only. It comes in Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trims. No base models here. They all get a 6.7L Power Stroke diesel engine that is bumped up this year to 450 hp and 935 lb-ft.
The Lariat trim features 10-way power adjustable leather seats. It also has a 10-speaker Sony audio system with an 8.0-inch screen and dual-zone climate control. Parking sensors are included and power-adjust pedals are standard. A Value package adds heated and cooled front seats and LED box lighting as well as power-extending tow mirrors. Lariat Ultimate adds ambient lighting, adaptive steering with lane-keeping alerts, push-button start, navigation, and the features of the Value package.
King Ranch adds more luxury features like unique King Ranch leather seats. They're heated in the front and - on crew cab - in the rear. It gets a special grille and unique paint as well as other trim inside and out. A King Ranch Ultimate package adds blind-spot alerts that cover the truck and trailer, a massive twin-panel moonroof, and power step rails.
Platinum adds blind spot alerts with trailer coverage, massage seats with Platinum leather, illuminated door sill plates, eucalyptus wood trim, body-colour bumpers, power step rails, and a satin grille. An Ultimate package adds radar cruise control with automated emergency braking, a twin-panel moonroof, and a trailer tow camera system.
Limited is the top trim and adds the special touches inside and out listed above.
