Le Ford Explorer n’était pas le premier VUS compact/intermédiaire, mais peu de temps après son lancement en 1990, il était l’un des plus populaires, rattrapant rapidement le Jeep Cherokee, alors que ce modèle avait plus de cinq ans d’avance.
C’est une preuve de la capacité de Ford à transformer pratiquement tous les segments du véhicule qu’il touche en or: l’explosion de l’Explorer sur le marché a engendré toutes sortes de concurrents de toutes sortes de fabricants et créé le géant que sont devenus les VUS en Amérique du Nord.
Pour 2019, les modifications apportées par Explorer sont mineures: l’équilibre de base est parti, laissant XLT comme point d’entrée; La XLT est maintenant équipée de série d’un moteur quatre cylindres turbo Ecoboost de 2,3 L et, en option, d’un V6 de 3,5 L, à l’inverse du modèle de l’année dernière. Toutes les versions de l’Explorer sont maintenant à 4 roues motrices (le XLT était utilisé au début) et sont livrées en standard avec une surveillance des angles morts avec alerte du trafic transversal.
Parmi les nouveautés, un ensemble en cuivre XLT qui ajoute des jantes de 20 pouces, des rétroviseurs chromés et des sièges en cuir noir à la garniture d'entrée de gamme XLT.
L'Explorer est par ailleurs reporté à partir de 2018. Le moteur de 2,3 L produit 280 ch et 310 lb-pi de couple dans les versions XLT et Limited, tandis que le moteur optionnel de 3,5 L convient à 290 ch et à 255 lb-pi dans une forme à aspiration naturelle. La turbocompression aide le V6 à produire 365 ch et 350 lb-pi dans les versions Explorer’s Sport et Platinum.
Grâce à la transmission intégrale permanente de l’Explorer, toutes les versions bénéficient du système de gestion du terrain de Ford, qui adapte le comportement du système 4WD, de la transmission et des commandes du moteur à diverses conditions environnementales au simple toucher d’un cadran situé sur la console centrale.
Les garnitures en platine transforment l’Explorer en un véhicule de luxe assez solide doté d’un toit ouvrant à deux panneaux, d’un volant chauffant, de caméras extérieures avant et arrière, de phares à DEL, d’un hayon mains libres, de rétroviseurs latéraux rabattables électriquement, d’une colonne de direction à réglage électrique pédales, navigation, sièges de la troisième rangée rabattables électriquement et sièges de la deuxième rangée chauffants.
Bien que l’Explorer soit placé au-dessus du Flex dans la gamme des VUS, il existe de nombreux chevauchements entre les deux en termes d’espace intérieur et de capacité de remorquage. Les caractéristiques de l’Explorer s’alignent parfaitement contre des voitures telles que les Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder et Chevrolet Traverse, tandis que la Dodge Durango, qui semble être un concurrent plus naturel, affiche un indice de remorquage plus élevé et peut être équipée d’un V8 de muscle car dans sa variante SRT.
Les estimations de consommation de carburant de la Ford Explorer sont de 13,1 /9,2 L/100 km (ville/route) avec le moteur quatre cylindres et de 15,2 /10,9 pour les modèles Sport et Limited avec leur V6 turbo.
