History/Overview
The Ford Expedition is the brand’s largest SUV model, a full-size utility that shares its basic architecture with the F-150 pickup truck. It was last redesigned in 2018; there are no notable changes for 2021.
Available Trims
Ford makes the Expedition in XLT, Limited, King Ranch and Platinum trims, the latter three of which can also be had as the stretched Expedition Max. All are powered by a 3.5L turbocharged V6 engine, a 10-speed transmission and four-wheel drive.
Standard Features
XLT trim comes dressed with 18-inch alloy wheels, backup sensors, flip-up tailgate glass, fog lights, body-coloured door handles, power/heated side mirrors, and a Class IV trailer hitch receiver.
Inside, XLT includes three-zone automatic A/C, power door locks/windows, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, an integrated garage remote, push-button engine start, Sync 3 infotainment, a six-speaker stereo, cloth upholstery, eight-way power front seats, and power-folding third-row seats.
XLT’s standard safety kit comprises lane keep assist, automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert.
To the exterior, Limited adds 20-inch wheels and tires, front and rear parking sensors, a power tailgate, passive keyless entry, remote engine start, a panoramic sunroof, chrome-trimmed door handles, LED taillights, rain-sensing wipers, and power-folding side mirrors.
Inside, Limited’s editions are power-adjustable pedals, an 8.0-inch digital gauge display, a 110-volt power outlet, wood trim, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, ambient lighting, navigation, wireless smartphone charging, a B&O sound system, perforated leather upholstery, a 10-way driver’s seat with memory and power lumbar, ventilated front seats, and power-folding/heated second-row seats.
King Ranch gets 22-inch wheels, enhanced park assist, Del Rio leather upholstery, power running boards, brushed aluminum scuff plates, and LED headlights and fog lights.
Platinum models gain an advanced cargo management system, multi-contour active motion front seats, and satin chrome door handles.
Key Options
XLT can add a 202A package that brings a hands-free tailgate, passive keyless entry, heated/ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. There are two FX4 off-road packages: one simply improves off-road capability, and the other further adds a 360-degree camera system.
Limited offers a 302A package of 22-inch wheels, LED front lighting, enhanced park assist, and 360-degree camera views. A 303A pack is similar but also gets adaptive cruise and black exterior trim accents.
Fuel Economy
Ford’s fuel consumption estimates for the Expedition are 14.1/10.7 L/100 km (city/highway) for the standard model and 14.7/11.2 for the larger Max.
Competition
The Expedition’s key competitors are the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, along with the Toyota Sequoia and the Nissan Armada. Expedition Max models are best compared to the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL.
