Le multisegment intermédiaire cinq places de Ford devient un peu plus sportif pour 2019 avec l’ajout du tout premier modèle de la famille axé sur la performance, le Edge ST.
En adoptant la même désignation de finition que celle utilisée par les versions les plus sportives des modèles Focus et Fiesta, la Edge ST officialise la décision de Ford de concentrer les ressources sur ses modèles VUS et multisegments. Pour être franc, nous ne voyons pas l’intérêt d’avoir un Edge ST, mais d’autres constructeurs le font, alors pourquoi pas Ford ? Ford l’appelle le premier VUS à «performances améliorées», mais c'est un peu une supercherie. Le modèle ST remplace l'Edge Sport, et utilise le même V6 bi-turbo de 2,7 litres que ce dernier en produisant 335 chevaux et 380 lb-pi de couple, une augmentation de 20 chevaux et 30 lb-pi par rapport à l'Edge Sport 2018.
Parmi les autres caractéristiques de la ST, citons une maniabilité et un freinage améliorés, une suspension à réglage ST et un mode sport pour adapter le comportement du moteur et une transmission automatique à huit vitesses aux humeurs du conducteur.
En 2019, la famille Edge est également passée à une gamme de moteurs entièrement suralimentés: l'ancien V6 de 3,5 litres n'est plus, de sorte que toutes les versions non-ST du Edge utilisent désormais un moteur à quatre cylindres de 2,0 litres turbo qui développe 250 chevaux et 280 lb. pi de couple. Il est également livré avec une transmission à huit vitesses. Les niveaux de finition sont SE, SEL, Titanium et ST.

Autre nouveauté pour 2019, les fonctions de sécurité de série incluent un avertissement de collision avant avec assistance au freinage dynamique; assistance pré-collision avec détection des piétons; surveillance des angles morts avec alerte de trafic transversal; alerte de voie et assistance au maintien de voie; feux de route automatiques; et aide au démarrage en pente. Vous pouvez désormais également obtenir votre Edge avec un freinage après collision, une assistance au maintien de la voie et un régulateur de vitesse adaptatif.
Reste à savoir si le Edge ST va inciter d’autres constructeurs domestiques à se tourner vers des utilitaires de taille moyenne axés sur les performances, tendance qui jusqu’à présent se limitait aux constructeurs haut de gamme comme BMW, Audi et Mercedes-Benz. Alors que la ST n’est pas proche d’un X5 M en termes de performances, elle ramène le concept de VUS vraiment sportif à un niveau plus accessible, en termes de prix.
Les estimations de consommation de carburant du Ford Edge pour 2019 sont de 11,5 / 8,0 L / 100 km (ville / autoroute) avec les 2.0L et FWD, de 11,9 / 8,7 avec les 2,0L et AWD et de 12,6 / 9,2 avec le turbo V6 de la ST.
