For 2009, the Ford Edge receives some new features. The new Sport model includes standard 20-inch or available 22-inch wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires, performance suspension and an eight-piece body kit, while the optional navigation system is next-generation and voice-activated. The Edge also receives Ford's ambient lighting packaging, which illuminates the footwells and cupholders in different colours.
The Edge, which is also the basis for the Lincoln MKX, uses a 3.5-litre V6 with six-speed automatic transmission. The SEL and Limited come in front- or all-wheel drive, while the Sport is all-wheel only. The system monitors and predicts traction and delivers torque to all four wheels before they begin to slip, and can transfer torque front-to-rear or side-to-side.
Features on the SEL include 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, SecuriCode keypad, tire pressure monitoring system, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, message centre with compass, auto up/down driver's window, rear cargo management system, heated cloth seats with six-way power driver's adjustment, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, six-CD stereo with auxiliary input and Sirius satellite radio, automatic headlamps, power blind-spot mirrors, privacy glass, variable intermittent wipers, and two-speed rear wiper.
The Limited adds 18-inch chrome-clad alloy wheels, body-colour keypad, heated mirrors with puddle lamps, reverse sensing system, heated leather seats, driver's side memory, six-way power-adjustable fold-flat front passenger seat, Sync, premium sound system, ambient lighting, garage door opener and power liftgate.
The Sport adds 20-inch alloy wheels, unique front and rear fascias, body kit, dark metallic headlamp and taillamps, large-diameter bright exhaust tips, leather-trimmed wheel with contrast stitching, heated leather-trimmed seats with Alcantara suede inserts, and unique dark-brushed finish on centre stack panel.
Depending on the model, available options include a remote starter, headrest-mounted DVD screens, rubber floor mats, navigation system, roof side rails, panoramic sunroof, trailer tow package, and on the SEL, a Blue Suede Interior Appearance Package with black and blue leather and Alcantara seats.
Elegantly styled inside and out, the Canadian-build Edge is one of the better crossovers on the market, with good performance, roomy interior, and a cargo area that can be opened up via the available fold-flat passenger seat to a full eight feet. The ride is smooth and the seats are comfortable for long-distance travel. The Edge has proved popular with customizers and Ford has run with this by offering the Sport model, which can be tricked out all the way to 22-inch rims and body kit, but should you want even more features, you can move up to Lincoln for the MKX.
