An all-new model in 2007, the Ford Edge crossover moves into 2008 with changes to its trim levels, and with new standard and optional features. New is Ford Sync, which allows a driver to activate telephone and MP3 players by voice command.
The Edge uses a 3.5-litre V6 engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Both the SEL and Limited models are available in front-wheel drive or an all-wheel system that monitors and predicts traction, and delivers torque to all four wheels before they begin to slip. The system can transfer torque front-to-rear or side-to-side.
Features on the SEL include 17-inch aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, tire pressure monitoring system, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, CD stereo with auxiliary jack and SIRIUS Satellite Radio, floor mats, tilt and telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, power locks with keyless entry and driver's side illuminated keypad, four power points, power windows, rear cargo management system, heated cloth bucket seats with six-way power driver's adjustment, automatic headlamps, fog lamps, power mirrors, privacy glass, rear spoiler, variable intermittent wipers and two-speed rear wiper.
The Limited adds 18-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels, reverse sensing system, six-way power heated leather seats, fold-flat front passenger seat, EasyFold rear seatback release, Audiophile sound system, Ford Sync, garage door opener, heated mirrors with security approach lamps and memory, and power liftgate.
The Edge, which also appears at Lincoln as the MKX, is elegantly styled inside and out and includes numerous details, including a 20-ounce cupholder in each front door pocket, juice box holders in the rear pockets, and a centre console that can hold a laptop computer. With the Limited's fold-flat passenger seat, the cargo area can be opened to a full eight feet. Add in the smooth ride and this should be on your crossover shopping list.
