History/Overview
Introduced in 2014, The Fiat 500L was the brand's first follow-up to the 500 city car. This wagon persists practically as a class of one: it's too large to be considered a hatchback but lacks the elevated seating position of a crossover like the 500X (covered in a separate buyer's guide entry).
Available Trims
The 2020 Fiat 500L is unchanged from last year. Trim levels are Pop (renamed from Sport), Trekking and Lounge. The sole engine is a 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder that comes exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
Standard Features
Pop trim includes keyless entry, engine block heater, tilt-and-telescopic steering column, body-colour roof and fascias, 16-inch wheels, leather-trimmed steering wheel and shifter, power windows, heated side mirrors, 7.0-inch infotainment system with satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a six-speaker stereo, air conditioning, height-adjustable front seats and hill start assist.
Trekking trim brings 17-inch wheels, fog lights, lower body cladding, leather upholstery, Beats premium audio system and heated front seats.
Finally, Lounge models get chrome body side moulding and side mirrors and a wrapped instrument panel.
Key Options
Trekking and Lounge can be optioned with navigation and a dual-pane sunroof as stand-alone extras.
Pop trim's popular equipment and premium groups bundle some of the upper trims' niceties for base-model buyers.
Fuel Economy
Fiat's fuel consumption estimates for the 500L are 10.7/7.9 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
Cross-shop the 500L with what compact wagons remain in today's marketplace. There's the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen and, beyond that, you'll be looking at either compact crossovers or upscale wagon models from brands like BMW, Volvo and Audi.
