For 2007, the Dodge Durango receives a facelift, with all-new fascia, grille, hood, headlamps, fenders and wheels, and updated interior materials and styles.
Changes include a new 6x9-inch heated folding mirror, which replaces the 5x7 fixed mirror; standard 115-volt outlet; standard side curtain airbags; three-flash lane change turn signal; standard trailer sway dampening; and available dual-zone front automatic temperature control. 4.7-litre engines are now flexible fuel-compatible; there are optional 20-inch chrome-clad wheels on SLT and Limited; optional quad bucket seats; available rear park assist; YES Essentials fabric on SLT; and tire press monitoring is standard on SLT and Limited. New exterior colours are Marine Blue, Steel Blue and Brilliant Black.
The Durango is available as the Durango SLT, Adventurer and SLT Plus, with a 4.7-litre V8 or optional 5.7-litre Hemi V8, or as the Limited, which only carries the 5.7-litre. The 4.7-litre is flexible-fuel capable, so it can run on E85 ethanol – although the fuel isn’t widely available in Canada – while the 5.7-litre features DaimlerChrysler’s Multi-Displacement System, which seamlessly shuts off half the cylinders under light load for improved fuel economy. All Durango models feature part-time all-wheel drive; a rear-wheel model sold in the U.S. is not available in Canada. SLT and Adventurer models have a single-speed transfer case, while the Limited uses a two-speed with low range, and all have shift-on-the-fly.
Features on the SLT include 18-inch aluminum wheels, seven-passenger seating, front and rear air conditioning, rear heater, front-row floor console, power locks, three 12-volt power outlets, 115-volt auxiliary power outlet, keyless entry, YES Essentials fabric, eight-way power driver’s seat, 40/20/40 split-row folding bench seat, third-row hideaway bench seat, CD stereo, cruise control, tilt column, power windows, engine immobilizer, tire pressure monitor warning lamp, fog lamps, heated mirrors, and black roof rack side rails.
The Adventurer uses 17-inch aluminum wheels, and adds front- and second-row rubber floor mats, rear cargo organizer, removable storage bin liner, running boards and roof rack side rails with stainless steel accents.
The SLT Plus builds on the SLT with eight-passenger seating, garage door opener, overhead console, illuminated vanity mirrors, rear courtesy and reading lamps, automatic headlamps, leather-faced front bucket seats, 60/40 split folding third-row bench, six-CD/MP3 stereo, leather-wrapped wheel and security alarm.
The Limited adds 18-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic temperature control, driver’s memory position, auto-dimming rearview and driver’s side mirror, power-adjustable pedals, power liftgate, rear park assist system, premium leather-faced heated seats, four-way power passenger seat, premium stereo with subwoofer, and power sunroof.
The Durango is a big vehicle, with matching capacity, but also with a correspondingly large thirst for fuel, although the 5.7-litre’s MDS does provide a little bit of relief at the gas pumps. The Durango is surprisingly nimble and drives more like a big car than a truck: call it a minivan with four-wheel capacity. Should the Dodge version be a little too utilitarian for your tastes, Chrysler has dressed it up for 2007 as the chrome- and feature-heavy Aspen.
