For 2007, the Chrysler 300 and 300C undergo modest changes. New 18-inch chrome-clad wheels are standard on both Limited and 300C; SmartBeam headlamp control and power-adjustable pedals are now standard on 300C; there’s a new interior colour, Light Khaki/Dark Slate Grey; and new exterior colours are Inferno Red, Steel Blue and Marine Blue.
A sibling to the Dodge Magnum and Charger sedan, the Chrysler 300 shares underpinnings and some interior components with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Its rear-wheel drive configuration can be optioned to all-wheel drive in all but the SRT8.
Engine choices are a 3.5-litre V6, found in the 300, Touring and Limited; a 5.7-litre Hemi V8 in the 300C; and a 6.1-litre Hemi V8 in the 300C SRT8. All use a five-speed automatic with manual shift mode. The 5.7-litre features a fuel-saving multi-displacement system (MDS), which seamlessly deactivates four of the eight cylinders when full power isn’t needed. The 6.1-litre Hemi is fully active at all times.
Features on the 300 include 17-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, fog lamps, heated mirrors, tilt and telescopic wheel, cruise control, power locks with keyless entry, power windows, eight-way power driver’s seat, 60/40 folding rear seat, and CD stereo with auxiliary audio jack. The AWD version includes 18-inch aluminum wheels.
The Touring adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, leather-faced upholstery and tire pressure monitoring system. The AWD version includes 18-inch aluminum wheels.
The Limited adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, automatic headlamps, power sunroof, one-touch driver and passenger windows, dual-zone automatic climate control, vehicle information centre, garage door opener, walnut wood trim, leather and wood steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated eight-way power driver and passenger seats, and Boston Acoustics six-CD/MP3 stereo with six speakers.
The 300C adds performance brakes, Xenon headlamps with washers and SmartBeam control system, tip-down mirrors with auto-dimming driver’s exterior mirror with memory, rain-sensing wipers, tortoise shell trim, leather and tortoise shell wheel, power-adjustable pedals with memory, premium leather-faced upholstery, and seven-speaker Boston Acoustics six-CD/MP3 stereo.
The SRT8 adds 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, performance brakes with Brembo four-piston calipers, performance-tuned steering and suspension, high-performance exhaust, trunk lid spoiler, premium leather-faced seats with suede microfibre inserts, six-speaker Boston Acoustics six-CD/MP3 stereo, and rear park assist system.
A winner of numerous awards when it was introduced, the Chrysler 300 remains a strong choice for buyers who want a roomy, moderately-priced sedan with rear-wheel drive. It’s a pleasure to drive even in base form, with a wide stance, taut handling, exceptional interior room and comfort and a very quiet cabin. The 5.7-litre should be enough horsepower for most, but the SRT8 is a muscular contender even among pricier performance sedans. Best of all, all models are made in Canada.
